The beautiful city of Medellín is the second largest urban centre of the Republic of Colombia and is the capital of the department of Antioquia. It has a population of around 3 million inhabitants and is located in the big valley-canon of the Medellín river, nearby the Cauca river, in the Colombian Andes at an average altitude of 1500 meters over sea level. The municipalities of Envigado, Bello and Itagüí are also part of the metropolitian area of the city. Medellín is well-known worldwide for its textiles and clothes confections, flowers, industries and for its lovely women.

 

The privilege to be surrounded by a mountain range, that remains green during all the year, gives always to Medellín a spring climate, great for the exercise of any activity. Its average temperature is 24 celsius degrees (74 F), which lets private and public companies maintain always open its programs of culture, recreation, sports, markets or business. Traditionally, Medellin is known as "The city of the eternal spring."

 

Its proximity to the Gulf of Urabá, the union point of the Americas, and of it with world's commerce through the Panama Canal, make Medellín to be a center of international communications in the opening and modernization of the economy.

 

There are currently two airports serving the city of Medellín; one, which has served the city for several years, providing former international service as well, is the Aeroparque Enrique Olaya Herrera (SKMD/EOH), now used for restricted domestic/regional service.

 

Since 1985, the José María Córdova International Airport has been in service and is located up in the Rionegro valley, under the jurisdiction of the city of Rionegro (Antioquia), to the east of Medellín. It gets all the cargo and international flights and most of the domestic jet services and shuttles as well. Scheduled flights to Central America and the USA are available.
