It is so awesome when folks get it right! And folks, CWDT got it right on this one! The plane flies absolutely beautifully! It is powerful and very maneuverable, but it is also faithful and pilot-friendly. They appear to have nailed this flight model! When I landed, the plane flew properly, with no tendency to pull to the left as I have seen with many high performance aircraft modeled in the past. All pilot reports I have read state this plane was a doll to fly, perhaps the most pilot-friendly and reliable high performance fighter of World War II. In this, CWDT did not disappoint one iota! The virtual cockpit is a dream. I noticed many of the switches did not toggle, but after only one flight, I have much left to discover. Initially, I could not find the master switch, but I suspect it's there just waiting for me to read the manual and figure it out! But, hey, I wanted to fly it first! But, what floored me was the fidelity of the interior cockpit. I just felt like I was in an actual Hellcat. Further, the taxi characteristics were just awesomely realistic. The plane turns with rudder inputs, which I think is realistic for a plane with that much airflow coming off the prop. Put in a little differential braking, and you can rapidly increase the rate of turn on the taxiway. There is no tendency for the plane to over steer. This is one of the most docile ground handling tail-draggers I have ever flown in FS2004. If the real plane handled this gently on the ground, then my fantasy warbird has just changed from P-51 to F6F!! What I loved was the fidelity of the engine control inputs. There is a marvelously realistic placard on the panel that marks the proper combination of manifold pressure and propeller RPM's for takeoff, climb, and cruise. Folks, let me tell you, you set the appropriate values, and the plane just sounds and flies so right! I highly recommend CH Throttle Quadrant for this airplane. It just makes the experience of dialing in the power settings so much more realistic. After one flight, I'm in love! Heck, I may have to let my Skyhawk set on the ramp in FS2004 and make this my new favorite mount in the game! Unfortunately, I don't have a working aircraft carrier for my FS2004, but the way this plane landed so faithfully the first time, I imagine with some practice you can master carrier landings with this plane. Congratulations, CWDT, you folks have released a winner. An unbeatable combination of quality and value which I highly recommend! Cheers, Ken |
