The Fieseler Fi 156 Storch (stork) was a small German liaison aircraft built by Fieseler before and during World War II, and production continued in other countries into the 1950s for the private market. It remains famous to this day for its excellent STOL performance, and French-built later variants often appear at air shows. It was powered by an air-cooled 180 kW (240 hp) inverted-vee Argus As 10C V8 engine, which gave the plane a top speed of only 175 km/h (109 mph), enabling the Storch to fly as slow as 50 km/h (32 mph), take off into a light wind in less than 45 m (150 ft), and land in 18 m (60 ft).
The long legs of the main landing gear contained oil-and-spring shock absorbers that compressed about 450 mm (18 inches) on landing, allowing the plane to set down almost anywhere. In flight they hung down, giving the aircraft the appearance of a very long-legged, big-winged bird, hence its nickname, Storch. With its very low landing speed the Storch often appeared to land vertically or even backwards, in strong winds from directly ahead.
Fieseler's entry was by far the most advanced in terms of STOL (Short Take Off and Landing) performance, because of its superb STOL characteristics which would be of obvious great benefit to bush pilots and mountain pilots.
Features:
- 3D models in 7 color variations
- 3D instruments
- Floating mounted compass

Just a quick update to my previous review- Mr. Stuck has diligently updated the sound file for this product with significant improvement. I've also had a chance to spend a little more time flying the airplane at airports and scenery around Switzerland (including the ski plane on a glacier as depicted in the product image). Noted that the airplane slips nicely to landings in confined spaces. I performed a little "fly off" between this FSX product and the wonderful freeware MS500/MS505 for FS2004 and overall find this product to be an enjoyable improvement and excellent value for the price. Given the customer service and based on a little more experience flying this model I happily upgrade my rating to "4." |

Regarding this product, I have both good news and bad news. But I'll start with the bad news and work to the good since consideration of this product deserves to finish on a happy note. First, the bad: -Sound quality: The engine sound has an interesting chugging quality with the throttle at idle. Perhaps this is characteristic of an Argus engine- I'm not familiar with the sound of a real one. However, as the throttle is increased the engine sound becomes more loud and distorted from the VC, while outside the airplane it sounds more like a default GA airplane. I have opted to replace my airplane sounds with a modified version of the sounds from the freeware FS2004 MS500 "Criquet" and I am reasonably happy with that. So there is definitely room for improvement here. -Textures: The exterior textures are a bit fuzzy (lower resolution) for an FSX product. However, the military camouflage livery is pretty good as one would expect camouflage to have a fuzzy appearance. VC isn't quite as crisp for an FSX product, but not bad. Again, an improvement opportunity here. -Documentation: None provided. The model is simple & straightforward enough that it isn't truly required. However, at least a "read me" indicating the key strokes required for the nonstandard features (such as cowling animation) would be an improvement. -Pilots are tied to nav lights function: Huh? A little odd, but not a biggie (for me at least). But enough criticism. Now for the good: -Fun to fly: I've never flown a Storch so I don't know how a real one flies. But this model has sort of a "gangly" feel to it as one might expect a Storch to feel like. Had to actually work my rudder pedals on takeoff a little bit to keep the tail behind the nose. Ailerons remain effective at very low speeds (slightly above 50 km/h) as one would expect for this airplane. Takes off and lands in very short distances comparable to a real Storch that I have seen at airshows. Overall, probably more forgiving than a real Storch but I expect this as much of a function of FSX limitations than of this model in particular. -Animations: The landing gear appears to articulate properly. Cowlings open. Interesting "flight manual" animation (clicking on the manual holder under the center instrument panel opens a diagram of the instruments labeled in German like a couple of pages from the flight manual). -Price: Relatively low compared to many FSX addon products. Overall, this is an enjoyable product, especially if you are interested in the Storch in particular or bush/STOL airplanes in general. Though there is opportunity for some improvement, overall I am pleased with my purchase and find it to be of good value. I look forward to updates for this product, or future product offerings from this developer. I would actually rate a "3.5" if decimal ratings were allowed. |
