Legacy Products

Just like the Flight Simulator itself as well as all other computer software, scenery design evolves overtime. Besides eventually becoming outdated with respect to the realism in which they depict their real world "counterparts", scenery Addon-ons for Flight Simulator also become outdated quickly in terms of the technology used to produce them and their visual quality overall. Unlike most other software however, scenery Add-ons often have no immediate successors while the demand due to the scenery's location is still there.

While we always try to produce innovative state-of-the-art Addon-ons that supersede our previous releases, we also wish to make new costumers aware that not all of our products are the same in terms of technology and visual quality. We will therefore be adding the term "Legacy" to our older products. The term "Legacy" indicates that we consider the given product not to be up the standards of our current releases anymore. Legacy products will be supported and updated by us as long as they remain compatible with the current version of the Flight Simulator. As far as brining these legacy products up to par with out latest releases, a complete rework from ground up is required, in which case they will become new releases completely replacing the legacy version.

Living just a few miles from Tampa International I often go there to take photos and I can tell you that this scenery is as close to the real thing as it gets! Incredible detail right down to the authentic highway signs leading into the main terminal. Raymond James Stadium even has a special treat for Bucs fans! You will have to make sure that you are running the minimum requirements on you PC in order to truely enjoy this add on at its full potential just because of all the animation of vehicles and running passenger shuttle trams. The night rendition is truely flawless and the night lighting is without a dought some of the best I have seen to date of any add on scenery. If you like accurate scenery, this is one of the better ones to come out in a while! Enjoy!

Not too many scenery designers know how to balance visual beauty and detail with acceptable framerates. The folks who designed FlyTampa have done a masterful job of just that. This really is one of the best looking add-on airports available for FS2002. The building textures, trees, moving shuttles, and flood lights are all extremely well done. Best of all, I found the framerate hits on my P4 1.9ghz with TI4600 Geforce4 to be less than expected and very acceptable - unlike Wilco's AP2002 Vol. 1 and most of Simflyers' add-ons. The only thing
I found that could have been a little better were the runway textures, but the superior quality of everything else more than made up for it. Great stuff!

After I wrote my initial review I uninstalled the scenery. Reinstalled with ALL options. Then I manually moved all the files mentioned on page 6 under "Performance tweaks". I simply moved them to another folder in the Scenery folder. Frame rates jumped significantly. So it looks to me that the installer did not work correctly even though I chose minimum install. Summary : Overall I think this scenery should now be rated at 4 stars. Because I gave it a bad rating in my first review I will rate it here with 5 stars. Thanks for reading.

Well, I don't know what kind of PCs the previous reviewers have. I have what I consider a solid gaming rig:
P4 2.53
1GB RAM PC2700
ATI 9700 Pro 128 MB
Xp Pro OS.
I installed KTPA in FS2004 without the the 3D lights effect (it is supposed to keep fps higher). I also reduced the number of gates to 30.
Sitting in a CS 727 at a gate in KTPA I get 5-6 fps looking straight ahead. When I go to external view I get about 5 fps. When I reduce traffic to 0 I get 8 fps. For comparison's sake using 100% AI and external view and the default Simflyers KORD AFCAD2 I get 8 fps..(literally 100 AI aircraft around me).
This is the only scenery I have problems with in FS2004. Reducing scenery complexity to 0 never brings the fps above 10 at the gate and in outside view.
On the runways I get 10-12 fps which is barely acceptable.
If you are looking for a scenery to complement SF Orlando go for KMIA. It is definitely much better optimized than Tampa. With AI and sitting at the gate I get 10 fps. Runways about 11-13 which is about right for an airfield of this size on my rig.
Summary : Unless you have a 3 MHz CPU or faster you might not like the fps - especially on the apron and some taxiways.
I would rate this with 0ne star because I think fps and object density have not really been optimized. I do however, realize the work that went into creating it and the amount of detail. So my final rating would be two stars.
Thanks

PS. The same authors's KMIA scenery is much better and performs as well as any other payware titles out there.
