More than just a patch!

My original plan to fix the obvious display issues when transferring the FS2004 scenery into FSX wasn't going to work out, as a few people had asked how to disable the FS2004-style aerial imagery in FSX. Rather than have to do this, I have increased the resolution to 2.5 metres/pixel, which should give a more FSX look.

There are some new FSX textures on the terminal buildings adding reflections. I've also fixed the level of Lake Rotorua.

Updated features:

  • Aerial photo textures now at 2.5 metres per pixel -- double the resolution of the FS2004 version;
  • Double the area covered by the aerial photo textures -- 30 x 50 kilometres;
  • Airside terminals etc now have realistic reflective glass textures.

About Rotorua

Centrally located in the North Island of New Zealand, the city of Rotorua, on the shores of Lake Rotorua, is a thriving multicultural community and tourist destination, bringing folk from all over the world to see this fascinating geothermal area. It's here you'll get a close-up look at Maori culture, as well as the all-senses experience where the geothermal underworld breaks through to the surface, with geysers, hot pools, sulphur-laden air and beautiful mineral deposits.

The lake is dominated by Mokoia Island, sometimes enveloped in mist and always a magical sight. It is said that Hinemoa and Tutanekai fell in love when Tutanekai visited Hinemoa's family, but Hinemoa was forbidden to see him. Tutanekai continued to serenade Hinemoa across the lake, but her family had hidden all the canoes so she could not be with him. Undeterred, Hinemoa swam to the island supported by six empty gourds.

It is easy to imagine this and other legends when you see Mokoia emerging from the mist.

Rotorua Regional Airport

This is a busy little airport right on the lake shore. Flying into Rotorua gives a good view of the lake, and it's quite common for 737s to do a circuit around the city for a close-up look at the geothermal landscape before landing. The airport is undergoing an upgrade at present, extending the runway for use by Airbus 320s. At the moment both Air New Zealand and Qantas have regular daily 737 flights.
