What people say:
Here's some early feedback in the forums etc:
" This is Robin's Finest Hour, and indeed, in my humble opinion, probably one of the best add-on sceneries for FS-9 in the world,........bar none !!!" from the NZFF forum.
" I am very impressed with this airport. Most of him are photoreal, like the landscape all around the airport and area(very nice). I special like the moving gates (accurate movings details)." -- SimMarket review
Ian Warren has some FSX screenshots on the NZFF forum, showing what a high-end system can do.
The airport:
When you fly into Wellington, or arrive by road, you are greeted by one of the most dynamic airport logos around -- proclaiming Wellington Airport "Wild at Heart"!
If you arrive on a fine day, this might not make all that much sense, but try taking off or landing on a typical windy day...
Wellington Airport is located on what is probably the only flat piece of land big enough for an airport within the whole Greater Wellington area. Even so, there isn't much space to spare, so it is a remarkably compact airport -- just one runway, and the remaining space is carefully organised to make the most use of it. You could walk around the airport easily -- I've done it -- but it makes more sense to go under the runway through the handy walkway.
Because of the limited space, larger aircraft such as Jumbos don't land at Wellington, and normally nothing larger than a 737 is scheduled. However it does cater for occasional visitors such as 767s redirected from Christchurch or Auckland,(but generally Wellington is more prone to closures than these other airports:)
Landing at Wellington can be interesting in real life, even as a passenger on a scheduled service. The normal procedure is to go round and round up in the clouds for a while, then drop down into zero visibility and hang on tight -- Wild at heart!
The single runway means that crosswind landings are common. The proximity to Cook Strait means that these winds can be scary...
The airport is tightly bordered by residential homes, a surf beach, a shopping centre, a golf course and... more houses. The control tower is located in a normal suburban street, with normal folk as neighbours -- with mums pushing prams past the tower, and kids playing in its shadow.
Wellington City:
Wellington is the capital of New Zealand, and home to Parliament. There, that's got the boring bits out of the way. Wellington isn't always windy and wild, you can fall in love with Wellington on a nice day. Wellington has been described as a village with skyscrapers -- that sums it up well. The main thing which strikes a visitor is the commitment to art -- works of art are on display everywhere, and the waterfront is a jumble of colour.
When you first see Wellington, its difficult to see where everyone lives. There just doesn't seem to be enough room amongst all the rollings hills as far as the eye can see. Wellingtonians can travel quite far to get home from the city, and this becomes obvious once you get up in the air and fly around the scenery. This particular scenery covers a large area, all the way up to Paraparaumu, but that's where some people live who work in Wellington.
Minimum requirements:
- 75 metre elevation mesh ; (freeware available from Geographx)
- Global Textures set to 'massive';
- 128MB of graphics memory; (it will run with 64MB, but you may experience some texture degradation.)
The FS2004 version of this scenery works best with :
- Red Baron 20 metre elevation mesh;
- Red Baron Topographical scenery.
- Visit the Red Baron site for details.
The scenery will work without these addons, but there will be some display issues relating to the low-resolution default coastlines. |
