FS VERSION FS2004

Nemeth Designs Sikorsky S-76 for MS Flight Simulator 2004

The development of S76 Spirit began in 1975, the first of four prototypes flew in 1977. The goal was to create a civil aircraft for offshore, ambulance and passenger transport service. The first version in mass production was "A", later versions "B", "C" has improved engines and avionics. Having concentrated almost exclusively on military aircraft thus far, Sikorsky announced plans in January 1975 for a twin-turbine helicopter for the civil market. The company had carefully evaulated the needs of potential customers and, after having examined various solutions, had already acquired a number of options. Building of the four prototypes began in May 1976 (the designation S-76 was chosen to mark the American bicentennial). The project clearly showed the experience gained with the S-70 combat helicopter. The second prototype was the first to fly, on 13 March 1977, complete with IFR avionics. From the outset, the aircraft was equipped for all-weather operation, as one of its main roles was intended to be the servicing of offshore oil rigs. The four-blade rotor of this aircraft is exactly like that of the S-70. The blades are built around a strong titanium spar; the leading edge is also titanium, while the trailing edge has a fiberglass and nylon honeycomb structure. The rotor hub is made according to the latest techniques to minimize maintenance: the normal bearings have in fact been replaced by elastomeric ones needing no lubrication, and special dampers virtually eliminate vibration. The powerplant is installed above the fuselage behind the drive shaft and consists of two 650shp Allison 250-C30 turbines.

This addon represents the EMS and the executive transport variants.

Features:

  • Accurate and detailed interior and exterior models
  • Reflective textures
  • Interior and exterior lights
  • Full clickable 3D virtual cockpit
  • Animated parts (doors, pilots, switches, attitude indicator in VC, etc.)
  • Custom animations
  • Realistic flight dynamics tested by real S-76 pilots

At Last - here is a Helicopter FS addon as good as fixed wing aircraft produced by some of the top players such as Carendo and Capt Sim. If they were to produce a rotor wing - this is how they would do it.
There are too many good features to mention in a short comment such as this. Anyone who has, like me, purchased other Nemeth products will be pleased with the improvement of textures, added window reflections and the opportunity to use the ctl +E to auto start without the need to go through the whole check list.
In real life the nearest to the S-76 i have had the chance to do a few hours in is the Agusta 109. This handles very simular although I have not yet been able to fly with one engine out but perhaps that is a limitation of FS - not Nemeth.
Perhaps it is a shame the package does not come with more liveries that those shown but they do supply the templates so Im hopeful that we will see more appear soon.
Well done for producing a fine product. Must go as I'm missing it already.
Regards
Gareth John

The ND S-76 is an amazing add-on for FS9. If you look around several FS forums, you'll see people complaining of engine out lights, etc... Practically every problem has been caused by people NOT following the checklist. I follow it and never once had an engine out light. In the forums, the more you read, the more you'll see "Oh, I followed the checklist and it fixed my problem!"
The quality of the S-76 is AMAZING, inside and out. The flight dynamics are excellent, and the start-up procedure realistic. The VC is sharp, LOTS of FUNCTIONAL and clickable switches, etc. 10/10 for the S-76 - my only dislike is that there's no glass cockpit version which is certainly nothing to take points off for. The last review had one small sentence saying the customer disliked this product...with no explanation. Just ignore that one. The screenshots look great, but do no justice to this REALLY REALLY fun helicopter. If you want a realistic chopper with realistic start-up procedures and flight dynamics that looks great, feels great, IS great, then get this helicopter!

This S76 is the best helicopter simulation out there. Completely accurate and detailed start up procedures and very stable handling. You will be very pleased with this offering. I haven't stopped flying since I bought it!!

I have previously bought the Mi-17 and EC 120 from Nemeth Design. They are both detailed helicopters, so I know what to expect from Nemeth Design, and that is the best in rotary-wing simulations. While fixed-wing flyers have many great developers making beautiful aircraft with realistic systems, there are few that can deilver the same quality to the helicopter simmer. However Nemeth Design tries to change this, and they succeed.
The S- 76
It should be noted that I do not have any experience in developing/repainting aircraft, however I do know when an aircraft looks good. And the S-76 does just that. The exterior is great and though more than the four default deliveries could have been provided, I'm sure repainters will deliver many pretty 76's in the future. I use TrackIR, which adds a new dimension to helicopter simming. And in this bird it comes to it's right. The VC is simply stunning, and I cannot recall having seen a prettier helicopter cockpit for MSFS. All in all it makes me feel I'm there, and that is rare for a helicopter. I would almost compare it to the PMDG 747 in terms of how nice it looks. And to me that's what's important with a VC, bringing me into it. The night lighting is nice, with normal instrument lights when any exterior light is on, and the additional red cockpit light is available. To me lighting is important. If you have tried the Aerosoft Piper Cheyenne you know how it should be done. Flying at night is great fun as long as you have a pretty cockpit, and I hope in the future this will be even better, by giving the pilot more options in terms of light strength, etc...
One thing that I miss though is a realistic autopilot. The 76 handles great, but as with any helicopters flying straight and level is a pain. I'm not saying it cannot be done, but it is boring as hell, and without any trim options and sensitive pedals, it can be tricky. I resolved this as adviced by the publisher, by getting Easy HAP which can be downloaded at Hovercontrol.com. Using that works great. But one thing I hope we will see in the future is a realistic AFCS for these IFR birds, preferrably with a FMC. But the helicopter is a complex piece of machinery, also on simulator primarily made for fixed-wing.
As mentioned the helicopter handles great. However having only flown R-22 in real-life, I cannot compare it to the real thing, but it is fun to fly, and that says it all. Another thing concerning handling is the stiffness, or lack of travel in the struts. However it is quite simple to fly, so setting her down gently is usually no problem, but I miss the dampening effect. I had minor issues with the panel after installing, however when I followed the directions on the support forum it worked like a charm.
My overall impression with the systems is that once again Nemeth Design have done a good job. The 76 is not very familiar to me, but it's fun when it takes more than ctrl+E to see blades turning.
Try this: position the helicopter on an oil-rig somewhere and plot a GPS course to mainland, at night, with poor visibility. Set the Easy HAP to HDG and set desired hdg to your destination. Finish off flying an instrument approach. Now that is fun.
My verdict is this, if you are serious about helicopter simming, this product is a must have. It has become my favourite helicopter ever made for flight sim. Good luck!

I would just like to add, seeing Toms comments, that i definately see and feel the wheel struts working to cushion a landing on my S76. It also works on the nose wheel.
