Aeroplane Heaven Hawker Hurricane Mk1

The Hawker Hurricane saw service with the British Expeditionary Force in the dark years of 1938 and 1939. A very different machine to the one that was to fight the Battle of Britain, early Hurricanes sported fabric wings and a two-blade wooden propeller. Following the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940, many improvements were made to the Hawker design from lessons learned in combat with the new German Messerschmitts.

Not the least of these was the fitting of a 3-blade variable pitch, constant speed propeller. This would come from Rotol or DeHavilland, depending on supplies available at the time of manufacture.

Improvements were made to the Merlin power plant and greater protection for the pilot came in the form of armoured windscreens and heavy armour plating behind the seat.

Wings were now skinned in metal and improved radio equipment was installed in the fuselage.The rugged design had proved itself over and over in the Battle for France and it could take enormous punishment. This was due mainly to the fabric covering of the fuselage which was retained and allowed high velocity cannon shells to pass through without inflicting damage to critical components. The eight Browning machine guns, built under license by BSA, stayed as the standard armament of the Hurricane Mk1.

Lacking the “cleaner” look of the cockpit of its counterpart, the Spitfire, the Hurricane’s “office” appeared cluttered and had no floor so that the complex framework was exposed. A legacy of the bi-plane heritage of Hawker’s design. Curiously, it never changed, even in later versions.

The Hawker Hurricane was to prove more than competent in destroying enemy bombers but lacked the performance and agility of the German fighters, especially at higher altitudes. That said, and contrary to popular belief, it was the Hurricane that was responsible for the lion’s share of “kills” in the Battle of Britain.

The flight model requires armloads of trim. You are constantly trimming. So it isn't hard to fly. It's just large, heavy and lets you know right away that if you don't fly her, she'll fly you. The engines seem to spool up much too quickly and unrealistically for a first generation afterburning turbofan. Also the buffet seems to come on too early. The pitch rate should be higher. Especially with the wings fully extended. The thrust for the engines seems too close together. Realistically, with one engine out, the thrust from one can easily exceed the yaw and roll authority. Also I almost wish the A model's engines were less forgiving like the real thing. It took forever to even get one to fail and it was fairly mundane and easy to control. The pilot and RIO figures look a bit cartoonish. The put-your-face-o-
n-the-pilot thing is somewhat adolescent. Otherwise the visual model looks good. It's worth it but I wish it made you work harder.

This scenery is virtually unusable. It has a huge file size, and once installed it causes huge stutters every time you pan or try to look in the direction of the city. It may look nice - I have no idea because I wasn't able to fly anywhere near it, due to the stutters. Don't waste your money.

The airport terminals look nice but night lighting isn't great. Especially with the old terminal. The main tower has no night lighting at all which is a let down. Ill definitely rate it a 5 if the night lighting is fixed

This does exactly what it promises: adds birds. And a lot of them, too. The only caveat: birds are not large compared to aircraft. It's hard to spot them unless you know what you are looking for, and have good eyesight. As such, this is a probably a more useful product for people who fly low & slow, or who fly helicopters.
