
Budapest is the capital of Hungary, formed in 1873 by the merger of three cities on the banks of the Danube River: Pest, Buda and Obuda. The largest city in the country and the ninth largest in the European Union.The first settlement on the territory of Budapest, called Ak-Ink, was founded by the Celts in the I century BC. Under the Romans, Aquinas became the center of the province of Lower Pannonia. In the Middle Ages King Béla IV of Hungary made Buda his capital. In 1867, Pest became the capital of Transleitania, one of the parts that make up the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.
The historic center of Budapest is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
