WELCOME TO COLOMBIA

Between 1930 and 1932, three wealthy families from the Medellín region (Mejía, Echavarria and Olano) started the idea of equipping the city with an airport, since they were part of the Colombian Air Navigation Company, destined to transport passengers and mail. from the city of Medellín to Puerto Berrio, then through the Magdalena River, which finally connects the cities of Medellín and Bogotá. One of the most important was Gonzalo Mejía, who decided in a very popular way which was the only place where the airport could be built. Curtiss Wright, a New York-based aircraft manufacturing company, will confirm the location.
The first airline founded in Colombia was Empresa Colombiana de Navegación Aérea in September 1919. A month later KLM was founded and later two SCADTA, predecessors of Avianca, settled in Barranquilla. At that time, the first flight had been made in Antioquia on January 26, 1913 in Agua Catara, La Pradera farm owned by Roberto Medina. Aviation flourished during World War I, but it was not until the 1920s that commercial aviation began to take hold around the world. On July 22, 1922, the Goliath, piloted by Italian aviator Feruchio Guicciardi, made its maiden flight in a wheeled plane from Cartagena to Medellín, landing in Guayabar, where an airport was built.
