The National Air races of 1928 had been completed and once again the field was swept by military competitors. Walter Beech was fuming. As long as the military could access the most advanced airframes in the world of aviation and mate them to powerful purposely built engines they would hold sway. He had had enough! Upon his return to the Travel Air Company he summoned his lead designer Herb Rawdon to his office and gave him his marching orders: build an aircraft that will beat the military and have it done in time for the 1929 racing season......an a legend was born.
