Bordeaux is the capital and largest city of the Gironde department and the New Aquitaine region in southwestern France. It is a port on the south bank of the River Garonne.
The city is famous throughout the world for its vineyards, especially since the 18th century, which gave it a true golden age. Capital of ancient Guyenne (approximately present-day Aquitaine), Bordeaux is part of Gascony and is situated on the border of the so-called Landes de Gascogne. It was classified in 2007 as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, which recognized the exceptional urban ensemble it represents.
Since the liberation of the city in the Second World War, the city has grown and is today the seat of one of the largest European coastal metropolitan areas, being a much appreciated tourist destination.
