Bordeaux is the capital and largest city of the Gironde department and the New Aquitaine region in southwestern France. It is a port on the south bank of the River Garonne.
The city is famous throughout the world for its vineyards, especially since the 18th century, which gave it a true golden age. Capital of ancient Guyenne (approximately present-day Aquitaine), Bordeaux is part of Gascony and is situated on the border of the so-called Landes de Gascogne.
