Sendai is a designated city and capital of Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, and the largest city in the Tohoku region. It is located on the northeast coast of the island of Honshu, on a narrow coastal strip between the Pacific Ocean and a mountainous area.
In Sendai, very few large companies are based in the city. Various authorities are cooperating to alleviate this problem, most notably encouraging high-tech ventures at Tohoku University, which is well known for its science and engineering departments. There are also incentives for startups available at City Hall.
Tohoku Electric Power, a leading regional electricity supplier, is headquartered in Sendai and also operates the Shin-Sendai Thermal Power Plant located within the city.
