Details

Rand Airport, located in Germiston, South Africa, has a rich aviation history dating back to its opening in 1931. Originally built as Johannesburg’s main international airport, it was one of the most advanced airports in the Southern Hemisphere at the time. It served as a hub for Imperial Airways and later South African Airways. During World War II, it was used for military training and operations.

After the opening of Jan Smuts Airport (now OR Tambo International) in 1952, Rand Airport transitioned to general aviation. Today, it remains active as a key center for flight training, aircraft maintenance, and airshows, preserving its historical legacy.
