The first supersonic trainer!

The Northrop T-38 Talon is a twin-engine, high-altitude, supersonic jet trainer. Adapted from an in-house lightweight fighter project (dubbed N-156F) that was aimed at the export market, Northrop was successful in the USAF competition to replace the aging T-33 trainer. The first prototype flew on 10 March 1959. Quickly adopted, it entered service in 1961. By the time production ended in 1972, 1,187 T-38s had been built.

Since its introduction, it is estimated that some 60,000 military pilots have trained on this aircraft! The USAF remains one of the few armed flying forces using dedicated supersonic final trainers, as most, such as the US Navy, use high subsonic trainers.

In 2003, 562 T-38s were still operational with the USAF and are currently undergoing structural and avionics programs (T-38C) to extend their service life to 2020. Improvements include the addition of a HUD, GPS, INS (Inertial Navigation System), and TCAS as well as PMP (a propulsion modification to improve low-altitude engine thrust). Many USAF variants (T-38A and AT-38B) are being converted to the T-38C.

Besides the USAF, USN and NASA, current T-38 operators include the German Air Force, the Republic of China Air Force, and the Turkish Air Force.

Introducing the Advanced Series T-38A Talon

Our original rendition of the historic and beloved T-38A is, in our opinion, a standout release for our simulation platforms. Very well received, with the stamp of approval from two real world T-38 pilots, we had spared no effort in attempting to create a near perfect rendition of the real aircraft. Hundreds of hours of testing and tuning a flight model created by a respected expert, faithful recreation of both the exterior and interior models, realistic texturing, along with a quality high definition sound set rounded out what we feel is one of our best products.

An Advanced Simulation

Our T-38A is about to steal your heart (or at least get it racing) all over again.

We are very proud to announce our advanced version of the T-38A, significantly raising the bar on what’s possible in your simulator. This release represents one of the most accurate and detailed simulations of a military aircraft to exist within the MS Flight Simulator / P3D environment. The real life T-38A has played a key role in the training of decades of military aviators; we believe that our new T-38A will bring an in-depth yet enjoyable training experience to your desktop.

True Physics Engine

Designed by an aerospace engineer with extensive experience in the simulation world and collaboration in other famed titles, the new Advanced Series T-38A features a 100% custom physics and flight dynamics engine (FDE). Aside from bringing in a new level of accuracy in terms of flight dynamics modeling, it lacks the traditional and well-known MSFS / P3D FDE limitations.

The aerodynamic model for our T-38 is based on Northrop and NASA data. It includes wind tunnel and flight test data, in addition to other technical sources. The final flight model has been corrected and validated by a real T-38 instructor pilot. The engine dynamics and performance characteristics of the twin J-85 engines are accurately represented, as well as custom ground dynamics and structural modeling being included.

As result of the accurately modeled physics, our T-38A matches the figures available for the real aircraft in terms of flight envelope, fuel consumption (range/endurance) and energy manoeuvre diagrams.

Custom Flight Control System

The flight control system for our T-38A is also custom created to match the real aircraft beyond what was previously capable. It includes a realistic Stability Augmentation System (SAS), a ‘Flap-Slab’ System (flap-horizontal tail interconnect), a simulated control stick bob weight, realistic Flight Control System limitations depending on aircraft configuration, realistic control surface response curves, and modeling of the hydraulic and electric control surface actuators.

Other custom systems include a realistically modeled nose wheel system that accurately represents the T-38’s characteristics and limitations, and Flight Control and Utility Hydraulic Systems realistically implemented including separated sub-system feed lines.

Failure and Damage Modeling

A completely custom and very in-depth failure system has been created for the T-38A. The failures model affects a wide ranging array of systems, including the airframe, engines, landing gear, hydraulics, flight controls, and the Stability Augmentation System. Forced or random failures are possible, with random failure probabilities adjustable to realistic values based on actual T-38 fleet maintenance data.

Damage is also possible due to exceeding real aircraft operating limitations. Icing is another source of possible damage, with possible engine damage occurring from flight into known icing conditions without anti-ice systems active, causing ice accrued on the engine intakes detaching and being ingested by the compressor. Ice may also accrue on the airframe, causing a degradation of handling qualities and performance. Last but not least, possible bird strikes may occur based on real data for military aircraft, with damage severity and systems affected based on a probabilistic system.

Accessible Complexity

Advanced though it may be, with all of its in-depth features and custom systems, it’s worth remembering our T-38A is still a simulation of a very well regarded training aircraft. The key qualities that have made the real T-38 such an important part of military training since 1961 are very well represented in our model. It’s not an overly complex, nor a difficult airplane to fly, yet it rewards a steady and disciplined focus by its pilot.

Unlike a study simulation of a combat aircraft, there is nothing beyond flight in the T-38A to manage. No radar, no HUD, no weapons systems. Once this jet is learned, being fast, light and nimble, it lets you focus simply on flying. And as every real world T-38 pilot will attest to, the art of flying in a T-38 is truly an enjoyable experience.

REVIEWS
Late last year, Milviz released the T-38A Talon Advanced, a follow-up to their 2011 T-38A Jet Trainer. The main new features in the Advanced version are a custom flight dynamics and physics model, failure and damage modelling and a new, custom, flight control system. Intrigued, I got myself a T-38, and strapped myself in the front seat. Let’s see whether Milviz managed to convince this virtual pilot, shall we?

RFSCENERYBUILDING - LIPX VERONA VILLAFRANCA FSX P3D
Achmed Haag
Nice scenery, nice airport, but the same problem as their LIRQ: RW04 closed for takeoff - why ? Search youtube, you will find departure videos for RW04 even for bigger iron. ADE 1.75 solved the problem: edited RW04 pattern TAKEOFF=YES. B-
tw: inserted ATIS 124.125 (s. NOTAM B3610/18 NOTAMR B1425/18 : Trial in 2018). I wish, flightsim reviewers would do some takeoffs/landin-
gs under several wind conditions and not only look at the well made buildings (except instead of flying, they prefer to stay at the airport admiring the nice scenery or takeoff/approac-
h with tailwinds ;-)
MP DESIGN STUDIO - AEROSPATIALE GAZELLE SA342 FSX P3D

Long time user of helicopter in fsx, this product is one of the few that describe what a chopper feels like, and what a gazelle feels like and right out of the box, no extra needed. Superb flight handling, very extensive systems and behavior, the whole custom coded by a competent and kind team (support is excellent too). The price tag is unbelievably low for this kind of product. One of the two or three chopper really worth in FSX for people who want an taste of choppers. Can't wait to see what's next!
RFSCENERYBUILDING - LIRQ FLORENCE PERETOLA P3D4

Nice airport, nice environment, but no start/approach on RW05. A review in the english simmarket (thanks to jon moran) lead me to the solution: Th-
e Airport is defined with RW05 only landing and RW23 only start, but in P3D V4 the ATC let me only use RW23 for landing and start, even with wind 10kn from 40° , so I modified the BGL with ADE 1.75. And I added the missing ATIS (skyvector.com says 129.350).
BLUEPRINT - KSFO SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL FS2004
Carlos Castillo
Aesthetically, it's a B+, but it's probably the best up to date scenery available (flyTampa's concourse A is partially blocked from a now defunct concourse so parking is limited). However, as far as practicality, 3/5. I should not have to debug the scenery myself in order to get it to work just fine. If you're familiar with troubleshooting common scenery problems, it shouldn't be too big of a problem. The parallel runways run independently, meaning it does not come with the crosswind runway technique in place to operate both the 10s and 1s simultaneously, so be prepared to see a congested SFO if you do not know how to have both in operation. The runway links do not have a designator, so you may have to re-link it to where they have a designator (thankfully it is easy but annoying if unfamiliar with). Overa-
ll, 3.5/5, but because I managed to tweak it to my personal liking, I rate it 4/5.
FABIO MERLO - FLIGHTCONTROLREPLAY PROFESSIONAL EDITION FSX P3D
Mike Agosin
A nice start for P3Dv4, but falls WAY short of what FSRecorder could do for FSX in it's day: - Customization of cameras - Programmable camera switching in a recordings timeline (time-stamping)-
- A render feature up to 60 fps in a compressed, .WMV format A recording addon works much more efficiently when it's installed into the sim itself rather than a stand alone program. I understand the developer has V4 coming soon with a render feature. Hopefully additional features as well.
SIMELITE SOLUTIONS - TIME ZONE FIXER FSX P3D
Dan Downs
This is exactly what I was looking for to fix the problems P3Dv4 had with time zone offsets in Alaska and Hawaii. When I complain to LM they said sorry, but they used the standard 15 deg per hour offset for places that were not heavily populated (like no one every goes to Hawaii, right?). This fixes that and of course globally, and nothing else so no stuff running in the background messing with the simulator clock function. This is just bgl files that fix the problem, and they issue updates as required. Simple and effective.
PACIFIC ISLANDS SIMULATION - POSTCARD PUERTO VALLARTA P3D
Dan Downs
I got tired of Taxi2Gate to update their offering of MMPR and purchased this one because so far I've been pleased with every Pac Sim product. This one is no exception, just flew an AAL DFW-PRV route and was very pleased with the quality of the scenery both on and off airport. The only things keep this from being a top rated scenery is the lack of moving jetways at the appropriate gates, and the gate placement/numbe-
ring not being representative of the real world. I'll continue to add Pac Sim products to my sim world.
BDOAVIATION - KANSAI INTL AIRPORT FSX P3D FS2004
Dylan Charles
Been waiting for a good rendition of this airport for a while and to my surprise BDO released this very quietly. Well worth the wait and the money. Not disappointed at all and the performance is great for such a feature rich scenery.
REALWORLD SCENERY - 3D PATK TALKEETNA ALASKA P3D4
Marco Gabbrielli
concerning detail, not a Orbx level product, yet the price is very affordable, there is quite AI activity off/to the airport, and it's a adequately good addon - from the visual standpoint - for those enjoying the Alaska wilderness thanks (I'd like the Talkeetna air taxi represented among the AI aircrafts .. :-)
FSIMSTUDIOS - TOCUMEN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT MPTO PANAMA CITY FSX P3D
