Waimea-Kohala Airport is located south of Kamuela Town at an elevation of 2,671 feet in the northern portion of the Big Island of Hawaii.

The predecessor of Waimea Kohala Airport was a U.S. Marine Airfield known as Bordelon Field which was just across the highway. It was the Kamuela Airport from 1946-1957.
In October 1946, the Territorial Department of Public Works published a Master Plan to construct a Class III Airport in Kamuela.  The proposed airport had one runway of 4,650 feet by 100 feet.

Waimea was a popular tourist center before the war and tourist facilities, which were occupied by Marines during World War II, were converted to tourist facilities.

On February 20, 1952, the construction of the new Kamuela Airport was started. In the following years, the airport has modified and completed new parts of the building. The airport has been equipped with new lighting and technology. The final view of the building has also acquired by 1972.
The terminal featured a ranch house design and was the first of a combination passenger-freight structure in the island.

As of June 2010, the airline listed flights from Honolulu to Waimea-Kohala (Kamuela) but none could be booked.  The site stated “Sorry there are no flights available” regardless of what date was sought. The HDOT is working to determine if scheduled passenger service should be discontinued at Waimea-Kohala, as passengers have access to Kona International Airport which is less than a 30-minute drive from Kamuela.

Nowadays, the airport is used for tourist excursions on the helicopters of the company "Paradise helicopters". Also, the airport is actively used for flights on gliders and balloons.

Absolute delight! This tiny commercial airport is one of the most detailed, authentic feeling airports I've flown into. You'll spend several minutes exploring the property and discovering all of the vignettes. If you enjoy inter-island commuter flights, you'll find some great passengers and many satisfying hours here.

PHMU may not be physically very large, but NSS has done a fantastic job of duplicating the real airport for us in MSFS. There are neat details like flags (fixed), a car in one of the buildings, and people in the terminal! I've flown to it during the day and at night, and had no problems either time. As others said, NSS has done some *great* airports here in Hawai'i (where I live), and up in Alaska. I can't wait to see what they turn out next! Lots of little / small strips in Hawai'i that could use attention. ** Highly Recommended **

Another little gem from NSS. Definitely worth the price of a latte in Waimea (yes things aren't cheap in this neck of the woods)! This is a great rendition of another Hawaii airport and also improves the surrounding area. It's the small touches that are the mark of a great addon designer and NSS are no exception. Textures, hangars, clutter, passengers - it's all here. Although I would love to see animated passengers like some of the new sceneries have. Either way well worth and five-stars from me. Really hope to see Kona and Hilo done from NSS in the future. Oh, and thank you Northern Sky Studios for making near, far and dear places even better to visit in MSFS!

NSS continues a solid track record of great small airports in Hawaii and Alaska. Waimea is no exception. It's a small airport, but the modeling and texturing are really good, and the ground textures are esp good. While the commercial future of the real airport is in question - it's great for short commuter hops from Maui or doing your Mokulele Airlines C208 flights. I'm really hoping NSS will take on Lihue and Kona in the near future - it'd be great to have really high quality airports to round out the major Hawaii destinations, as it seems FSDT isn't going to rev there FSX/P3D versions anytime soon.
