The basic fighter for most NATO countries for several decades, this aircraft deserved a place in FSX. For the last year Aerosoft has been working on a high detail model of this aircraft and now you will see the Fighting Falcon fly into the virtual world of FSX.

The F-16 Fighting Falcon is a multirole jet fighter build by General Dynamics for the US Air Force. The lightweight fighter became the ubiquities fighter as it was exported to 25 nations and a record breaking production of over 4,400 aircraft. Updated every decade it remains the basic fighter for nations worldwide. Apart from being a very serious fighter it remains about the most enjoyable aircraft to fly with the superb maneuverability and power that allows vertical climbs. Visibility is unparalleled in the frameless bubble canopy. This enjoyment remains fully intact in FSX.

The Aerosoft version includes the most used versions in the highest possible detail. With close to half a million vertices it most likely is the most detailed aircraft ever designed for FSX. The realism of this product is great that parts of the product are sold to professional users and is used in the first stages of training of pilots in 3 countries. Where other internally developed aircraft try to merge all existing models into one 'universal' model, the F-16 was designed with pure realism in mind, down to the smallest detail each of the 21 models is as the real aircraft patrols the skies. In FSX the F-16 is a joy to fly, with the controllability of a light aircraft and capable of altitudes of 50.000 feet and speeds exceeding Mach1. It is extremely agile yet easy to control (it will fly where you point the nose) it allows you to explore the environment of FSX like never before.

Please note that this product is 100% focused on flying the F-16 and none of the offensive and defensive systems are modeled (though the radar allows tracking AI aircraft). There are also no ground objects that appear when parking brakes are set etc. Every last byte has been used to model the pure aircraft. So do not expect bombs that fall off, missiles that speed toward targets or ground power units.

Question: What is the best F-16 addon for FSX? Answer: Aerosoft’s F-16. Its that simple. Fighter jets in FSX are a touchy subject since FSX was never designed to be a combat sim platform. So developers of warplanes have to strike a delicate balance between functionality, appearance, and features to be simulated. Aerosoft’s implementation of the Lockheed Martin F-16 strikes that perfect balance.

It doesn’t take much to learn how to get airborne. The fly by wire system is perfectly implemented and has been verified by many real F-16 pilots. There are many “liveries” displaying all sorts of stores and stuff you can carry on the Falcon’s wings and underbelly.

The virtual cockpit is not HD, and most of the F-16 systems are not simulated. If you’re looking for a complex F-16 sim, check out Falcon 4.0 Allied Force, or Falcon BMS. Aerosoft’s F-16 is designed to look good, and be easy to fly. You can’t fire the gun, and you can’t bomb anything. It does have a primitive radar that you can use to find and track AI or Multiplayer Aircraft. It also has basic VOR navigation capabilities. You can also load an FSX flight plan and I will show on the right MFD that you can use to fly to your destination.

Also, a fun feature of this addon – if you need to top off your tanks, just find any commercial jumbo jet in flight (AI or multiplayer), fly into refueling position and voila, your tanks are topped off.
Flying the Aerosoft F-16 is loads of fun and is a must have if you plan to do any virtual airshows. The F-16 is also a blast to fly through the grand canyon, barnstorming the canyon walls and what not.

Landing, however, is a different story. From an aviation design perspective, the F-16’s design is an abomination. Without the Flight Control Computer, and the fly by wire technology, the F-16 is unflyable. So most of what you’ve learned over the years re: aviation and how to fly planes, largely doesn’t apply to the F-16. However, you can adapt. Landing the F-16, you’ll probably crash your first time, unless you’ve done the research, and know what it takes to safely land this bird.

In Summary, the Aerosoft F-16 is a bundle of fun. Learning to land safely is a bit tricky, but definitely worth the effort. 5 stars.

This is an exceptional product and the screenshots show the highly detailed exteriors and interiors of the aircraft.

But dont expect anything else. There are no drag chutes to deploy, no dust covers when cold.

The great news is that it is almost bug free but do check the aerosoft forum first to see if any issues would hit your frame rates.

Well done aerosoft - a 5/5 is a deserved score!
