Now Updated !! FSCargo now also works for LARGE AIRCRAFT, providing tons of fun for airliner pilots who want to ferry something else than just passengers. Caters for ALL types of aircraft, from Cessna 172, to DC-3, King Air all the way up to the Boeing 747 Cargo !!

FSaddon.com's FSCargo was conceived by Francois Dumas... being an 'old' bush pilot, flying around with EMPTY aicraft in Alaska. Beautiful scenery, serene flights, yes...... Fun ?? Yes, but could be much better !

The men who made my virtual dream come through are Maurizio Gavioli (the master of FS interaction and author of such wonderful tools as IntelliScene, ViMaCore and many more !!) and Bill Womack (who you may know of the 'MAAM airfield' in Reading, 'our' Antelope Trail Ranch in Misty Fjords, our Freight Dogs and so many other wonderful sceneries).

Maurizio and Bill have come up with two things:

  1. the 'functionality' of it all -->> Maurizio
  2. the visualization of the idea -->> Bill

So what is FSCargo? Where is it more than a 'load manager' ?

FSCargo is the first interactive system that will allow you to get an assignment (of carrying freight), SHOW you the cargo waiting for you at an airfield, allow you to LOAD it into your plane, fly to somewhere else, DROP it at that destination and actually SEE it again after unloading !!

Sounds simple!? It isn't, really!! Sounds fun!? IT SURE AS HECK IS !!!!

The way it works (in simple terms) is that you start the FSCargo module (in your menu bar in FS), and ask for an assignment. The system will generate a few possible options (based on WHERE you are). It will provide you with two airfields (the 'from' and 'to') and a type (size, weight) of cargo. If you like the assignment, you accept it (pressing a Function Key), if you don't you can ask for another.

Once you accept an assignment you will have to fly to the departure airport (in case you are not there yet), FIND the cargo area - which Bill has made visible for you (see the pictures), ride up to the cargo and LOAD it, again by pressing a function key. It is SO GOOD that you can even see you airplane sag down a bit when the weight of the cargo is added. YES... it ADDS the weight to your aircraft of course !! Making it important to check your fuel and take-off weight !! The cargo is now no longer visible.

When you start taxiing the TIMER starts ticking. We've made it a bit more interesting by calculating a maximum time allowed for the assignment. If you complete it within that time, you get a better rating! But you can ignore that if you like ;-)

When you reach your destination airport you'll have to find the Cargo Area again, taxi up to it and press a key, UNLOADING the cargo. And there it is, sitting safely on the platform.....

We are now at VERSION 1.2 of the product, allowing for larger loads and large aircraft. Further expansions will follow.. we have many ideas. Some will be free even... some will be additional products, based on the 'engine' we have designed now (like the brand new FSCargoX that we are working on for FSX !).

Of one thing we are sure: you will LOVE all of them !!! :-))

The thing with FSCargo is that it does not set out to include an economic model in the Version 1.0 release, or other frills such as sound effects of (in this case presumably) tea chests splintering if you fly erratically. Bush pilots pride themselves on being erratic, anyway, that's part of their charm!

The developers stress that this is a core program, which will evolve over a period of time in response to feedback, and additional features will often be free upgrades in any case. The concession to efficiency within the program is that your assignments are timed, and marked according to a set standard.

Don't confuse 'core program' with 'not much to it' however! The detail in the modelling of the various cargos that lie waiting to be moved to their destinations is first class, as is the variety of extra scenery that accompanies the cargo pick-up/drop-off areas at the airports covered. 'Out of the box' there are assignments (which can be selected by location, duration, etc) between hundreds of airports, chiefly in Alaska, Canada and the Pacific Northwest - the areas beloved of Flight Sim bush pilots - and often have two cargo area scenery placements, to suit both default airfields and those which have had the commercial addon treatment. If you like to fly in other areas, there is also an included editor to enable the creation of assignments anywhere in the world; if you prefer, you will be able to download other areas (free) from the developer's website.
Basically, if you favour GA or bush flying, but have ever felt you needed some structure to your trips, then this is the thing you need! A great addon from a team very much on top of their game.

Before I purchased and installed FSCargo I would not really have much of a plan when I flew. Sometimes I would start flying and just wander around and would soon get bored. Now I have an assignment with someplace to go and a job to do. And for the gamer in you, you are rated at how well you do it. This add-on has renewed my interest and has been a shot of new life injected into my flight simulator experience. I was pretty amazed when I actually saw the landing gear compress on my aircraft when I loaded up my freight. The only negative thing I can say about it is that you don’t get to actually see the freight you loaded in the back of the airplane, but this is beyond the capabilities of the simulator so I can not deduct any points from the program for that. In order for that to happen the aircraft you use would need to be modeled specifically for all the freight that you could pick up. By setting it up this way you can use almost any aircraft you own with the program. I highly recommend this program, and if you find yourself getting bored with FS9 lately, it’s a “must have”.

For your money this is what you get. You fly as fast as possible from one location to the next. You are greeted by 2 lights, either a truck, forklift or a cart. You then race to the next airport. You are either early or late. Thats it.
I was really dissapointed at first for I feel its just a good freeware idea being sold for profit. Im not basing my review on what might be ahead, what is planned to be added but for what it is. For that I would give it a 2.
For some reason though, it is very addictive, fun and because you can easily create your own pickup and drop off runs, it creates random ones from those you have created, I give it a 3.

I bought this as an owner of FsPassengers thinking that it would be a cargo version of FsPassengers. I couldn't have been more wrong. The cargo runs feel VERY samey after a short while, and there are hardly any cargo areas included - they have left it up to the community to expand it. They have to a small degree, but bascially it is up to you to build your own cargo areas for the airports you want to visit, otherwise you can't use the airport in question.
I would wait to see whether the next release of FsPassengers includes Cargo hauling before parting with any cash. For me, it is gathering dust and I haven't fired it up in 6 months (about the time I bought it!).
Gets a second star though because it is a cheap product. Had I paid thirty euros I would have been very unimpressed.
