Stefan Rausch, the author of the famous Austrian Aiports Series, used his time spent on the Cape of Good Hope to collect material on Capetown and it's international airport. The results are here!
The airport Capetown International - D.F.Malan (FACT) has been reproduced in high detail, all buildings based on textured photographs. Also included are many buildings of the city of Capetown aswell as the famous Waterfront from Greenpoint Lighthouse to the Tableday Hotel.
Attention Heli pilots: Helicopter landing pads around the seaport as well as on high buildings provide additional points for area exploration.. |

I bought this scenery shortly after it was published in December. I was very happy and delighted that a very capable scenery designer created a scenery of the place where I grew up and is still my favourite city. I would like to thank Stefan Rausch for this. Now I would like to review the product objectively for others who are considering to download it. I want to add, that I was at D.F.Malan Airport in November and December, shortly before this scenery was released. I was very impressed with the way Table Mountain shows itself like it has never been in any terrain mesh published before as far as I can tell. Even Devils Peak and Signal Hill are quite representativ of the real ones - but where has Lion's Head dissappeared to ? I think it does cause some irritation to the completeness of the terrain. The second thing I want to mention is the airport itsself. All the buildings are painted in a very good quality style. The taxiway markings are also in the style found at the real airport. It makes one feel quite at home when virtually landing here. Only two things to mention here - there is only one passenger bridge availiable at one heavy stand - they actually have 3 bridge positions and a few more parking stands for heavy aircraft in the real world. So if I land here with a heavy I'll usally park at the cargo terminal because the other spaces are used by the AI aircraft. The other thing is, that there is an error that two PAPI systems appear for the main runway 01 and 19 simultaneously- the original PAPI lighting is not excluded - this is very irritating and calls for a patch. Also I miss all of those windsocks - due to windy Cape Town they are really a must. The other buildings around Cape Town are quite fantastic, unique, although a few more could of been added, that would have rounded up the product deceicivly: the Castle, the Parade with City Hall, Rhodes University/Memorial and the train-station in town. What is also a bit strange, is that you can actually fly through underneath the Disa Towers (the three towers just under the mountain) - they are sort of floating in the air. So to come to a final conclusion I would say we have a great scenery project in our hands - it just seems a bit unfinished to me. What is most irritating to me though, is that I contacted both the author and the publisher and to this day, two months later absolutely no response at all. I mentioned the issues and it would have been nice to get an explanation to why things are like the way they are. The PAPI issue is a thing that really should be fixed, it take no time for the developer at all, he could just take out one and it would be fine - and of course adding some windsocks. With the way things are at the present time I give this scenery a 65% rating. This is payware and I do expect a little more for the money, especially a support response. Stefan Rausch did a great job, but just leaving it there where it is, gives me an impression he did not feel like working on it further - a pity. Patrick Nehrkorn |
