Although the Gloster Meteor is regarded as typical of Britain’s Jet Age supremacy, its development actually began in the dark days of 1940 and the design, although quite primitive, turned out to be a successful fighter and evolved quickly through the 1940s and 1950s. Although the aircraft saw only limited combat in WWII, nearly 4,000 airframes were built in a variety of specifications, including ground attack and photo-reconnaissance, and served with many countries. Meteors flew as night-fighters, trainers and ejection-seat test-beds. An F.3 set the world’s first official air speed record for a jet aircraft on 7th November 1945 at 606 miles per hour. The following year an F.4 extended this record to 616 miles per hour. One Meteor, fitted with Rolls-Royce Trent turbines driving propellers, even became the world’s first turboprop aircraft to take to the air.

Although quickly eclipsed by the stars of the late 50s and 60s, the Gloster Meteor will always hold its position in the history of aviation as the UK’s first operational jet fighter.

This FSX/P3D collection includes models of the F.8 fighter and the FR.9 fighter-reconnaissance variants, in a total of 12 liveries. The detailed virtual cockpit features simple autopilot functionality, simulated UV cockpit lighting and a retractable reticle gunsight. Other features include selectable wing fuel tanks or wing-mounted (non-operational) rockets (rockets non-operational), an authentic sound set and selectable identification light colours.

Take a look at Greg McKenzie's cockpit panorama for a full 3D tour of the Meteor cockpit!

LIVERIES

Meteor F.8

  • WF714 of No. 500 Sqn Royal Auxiliary Air Force, West Malling, Kent, 1953
  • EG-10 MN-S of 350 Smaldeel, Belgian Air Force, 1950s
  • FS4440 of the Brazilian Air Force, now resident at the TAM Aviation Museum
  • A77870 of the Royal Australian Air Force 'Meteorites' aerobatic team
  • A77851 of 77 Sqn Royal Australian Air Force - the famous 'Halestorm' flown by flown by Sgt George Hale during the Korean War and credited with two MiG kills in 1953. A Mk.8 has been restored to replicate the famous fighter and is currently the only Meteor F.8 still flying.
  • A7717 of 77 Sqn Royal Australian Air Force, Korea, 1953
  • VZ467 Meteor F.8 of 615 Sqn (County of Surrey) Royal Auxiliary Air Force. This particular aircraft and scheme was prepared for a flypast to celebrate Winston Churchill’s birthday, but due to a fuel crisis the flypast never actually took place.
  • WK 681 F.8 of No.65 Sqn, RAF Aerobatic Team based at Duxford in December of 1953

Meteor FR.9

  • WZ603 of No. 8 Sqn RAF, Sharjah May, Oman, 1960
  • WZ956 of No. 208 Sqn RAF, Ta Qali (Malta) (Operation Musketeer), 1956
  • FR-36 Meteor of 117 Tajeset, Israeli Defence Force, 1955. It was in this aircraft that Capt. Aharon Yeoli shot down two Egyptian De Havilland Vampires to score the IDF’s first jet kill. How ironic was it that the victims that fell to his guns were also iconic early British jet fighters?
  • WL 263 of No. 208 Squadron RAF, Nicosia, Cyprus, 1956

GLOSTER METEOR

Although the Gloster Meteor is regarded as typical of Britain’s Jet Age supremacy, its development actually began in the dark days of 1940 when the Battle of Britain was being fought in the skies over war-torn England and the threat of invasion was imminent. Sir Frank Whittle had begun work on the power plant for Britain’s first jet in 1936 and it was this pioneering work that led to the eventual first flight of a Meteor in 1943. The first operational fighters went to war with 616 Squadron RAF on the 27th July, 1944.

The design, although quite primitive, turned out to be a successful fighter and evolved quickly through the 1940s and 1950s. Although the aircraft saw only limited combat in WWII, nearly 4,000 airframes were built in a variety of specifications, including ground attack and photo-reconnaissance, and served with many countries - Argentina, Egypt and Israel among them. Australia flew the Meteor in Korea with great success, claiming several victories over the more sophisticated MiGs and carrying out many ground attack sorties.

During the 1950s jet aircraft development surged forward with much faster and more powerful designs like the F-86 Sabre from the USA, Gloster’s own Javelin, and the amazingly successful Hawker Hunter rendering the Meteor obsolete as a front-line jet fighter. Although quickly eclipsed by the stars of the late 50s and 60s, the Gloster Meteor will always hold its position in the history of aviation as the world’s first operational jet fighter.

DIGITAL DESIGN - EDDP LEIPZIG-HALLE FSX P3D
David wright
wow wow wow, this is a fantastic airport i have a low end pc and this copes very well with all my sliders to the max. there is no fps loss at this airport, and the detailing is stunning, even when the AIplanes take off there,s no jerking, they simply just glide away nice and smooth. well done DD. you must buy this or you will miss out.

FSXCENERY - KTYS MCGHEE TYSON AIRPORT FSX P3D

I've been waiting for a long time for a KTYS scenery, so I decided to buy this one. I can understand that the money goes to your pet shelter and I appreciate that but charging us for this scenery is a bit unfair as this should be a freeware scenery considering what it offers. You should at least fix two big problems : Even in spring and summer, grass is brownish and you can see snow covered trees all around. I hope there will an update soon. The support link doesn't work by the way.

This is another masterpiece by Digital Design, well done! Beautiful modelling, texturing and colouring throughout, and SODE is used which is very much welcomed. Also the surroundings were well taken care of and the airport blends nicely with FTX OpenLC Europe. All this with very good frame rates and VAS usage. Howev-
er I can only give three stars as there's simply NO excuse to not include the visual docking guidance systems on those stands who have them! I sincerely hope that these will be added in the near future, perhaps by collaborating with SODE who's about to provide these at some point in the future. Once the visual docking guidance systems are in place, I'll gladly give five stars!

We waited a long time, but the wait was worth it! A great performance from Digital Design. In contrast to the GA2 EDDP of AS is the simply only the hammer. Two small things I noticed first, would be super if this vlt. Still be fixed. 1. The aircraft docking systems are still missing 2. GSX does not fit properly. The pushback and luggage cart is on the road in front of the gate and the standard ground vehicles roll through the GSX vehicles. The GSX side would still have to be positioned differently. The ground vehicles also roll through their own aircraft, but this is so in almost all sceneries. C-
onclusion! EDDP from DD - Simply top! The lights fit, the PAPI is top, it is really fun to fly our home airport! Tha-
nks to Digital Design! Mario
FLYTAMPA - AMSTERDAM FSX P3D

Without doubt, this is a fabulously detailed and beautifully modelled version of EHAM and the area surrounding airport. The textures are perfect and framerates are good*. *But I cannot give the full 5 stars because the installation into FSX:SE was painful (continual error messages about a missing .DAT file) and once installed with the HiTex supplementary file loaded, my (high end) system crashed with a constant out of memory error message when running with the PMDG 738 NGX. Consequentl-
y, and in order to run the PMDG 738 NGX with it, I am forced to run this airport on it’s lowest Flytampa memory settings and am also forced to use the LITETEX package. I now wonder if the Aerosoft version of EHAM (which I have used for years) is just as good as this now it is on such reduced memory settings.

A masterpiece from DD! Just buy it, it's worth every penny.

Yet another Digital Design masterpiece. They are right up there with FlyTampa if it comes to detail and still FPS friendly. Wonderful scenery and absolute worth the upgrade from the old GAP airport. It blends effortless with ORBX Global and FTX Germany North. The surroundings have lots of detail like railways, roads, and even static aircraft. It uses SODE plugin and the jetways work with all the other bells and whistles that come with it. Absolutely worth every euro to have this airport in your library. Well done Digital Design!
PAULO RICARDO - SALVADOR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT SBSV AND CITY FSX P3D

I don't know how I must have skipped buying this scenery all these years. I guess it's because I mostly fly in the US, and because I normally relate Brazil with the Rio scenery, didn't realize Salvador International is in Brazil too. For some reason I thought this was an airport in the country of El Salvador. Never the less, what an amazing scenery! Purchased it during a sale event, and I have no regrets. Looks great in both FSX and P3D, lots of visual points and great frame rates and VAS usage. I recommend this scenery without hesitation.
PREALSOFT - ALGIERS AIRPORT DAAG FSX P3D

Waited a long time for this scenery but at the end very disappointed. Expected better scenery with that price tag. It looks like the freeware DAAG scenery produced for FS few years ago.
