Newark Liberty International airport’s location within ten miles of Manhattan makes it a convenient alternative to JFK and LGA for access to the world’s financial capital. KEWR is also one of United Airlines major domestic and international hubs and ranks fourth in the US for international passenger traffic. Blueprint Simulations’ rendition of this important airport is by far the most detailed and accurate ever attempted. It depicts the airport as it exists in the summer of 2014.
KEWR has three passenger terminals. The first two (A and B) opened in 1973 and the third (C) in 1988. The three terminals share a distinctive curved design and their positions fit the long side of an ellipse. This configuration is unique to KEWR and posed an exceptional scenery design challenge. Terminal A remains largely unchanged and its three concourses retain their original configuration and circular design. This terminal handles domestic traffic and flights to and from Canada operated by airlines including Air Canada, American, JetBlue, Southwest, Virgin America and United’s regional partners. Terminal B accommodates primarily foreign carriers including Air France, Air India, British Airways, El Al Israel, Scandinavian, Japan Airlines, Lufthansa, TAP Portugal and Virgin Atlantic. In addition, Delta Airlines and its regional partners use the southernmost concourse (gates 50 to 59) and United uses some gates for domestic and international flights. This terminal also retains its three circular concourses although remodeled and expanded to accommodate updated immigration facilities and other international travel amenities. Terminal C serves as United Airlines main east-coast hub and handles non-stop flights to every major city in the US, Canada, Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and Europe. Extensive renovations completed in 2003 as part of Continental Airlines international operations expansion project included three entirely new concourses.
Our scenery depicts the three terminals and nine concourses in painstaking detail. We used BluePrint’s standard 32 pixel/m texture resolution and the highest possible level of three-dimensional detail throughout the entire scenery. The FSX version features complex transparency and reflection effects. Passenger boarding gates match information available for actual location and airline usage during the summer of 2014. Each gate features accurate numbering, a customized and branded static jetway, a basic parking alignment aid and optional static service vehicles. The scenery also features customized ramp markings and illumination effects throughout.
Blueprint’s KEWR scenery includes highly detailed and accurate models for most general aviation, cargo and maintenance facilities within the airfield’s boundaries. All aircraft hangars are fully three-dimensional and usable. The locations of runways and taxiways match official FAA data. Navigational aids also match FAA data and enable the use of official charts and databases to complete realistic flight procedures within the world’s busiest airspace under the most challenging weather condition. The scenery also features realistic taxiway markings and signage throughout the airport. It includes a complimentary set of high-resolution, photo-real terrain textures featuring seasonal changes and carefully blended with the surrounding environment.
