history
The Palonegro International Airport, located in the Palonegro village of the municipality of Lebrija, marked a new stage of progress for the department of Santander and its capital, the city of Bucaramanga. The work was carried out by Civil Aeronautics, which was also responsible for the construction of the new airports in Montería and Pitalito, and remodeling works in Leticia and El Dorado in Bogotá.
The facilities were inaugurated by President Misael Pastrana Borrero in August 1974; The inaugural flight was carried out on an Avianca Boeing 727, under the command of Captain Álvaro Barrera Gómez.
The Palonegro airport replaced the existing Gómez Niño Airport, located within the urban area of Bucaramanga, which had important limitations due to the geographical location, length of the runways and adverse conditions for safety and air navigation.
