VFR in the Great Southern Land – Part II
Last time we went exploring the southern most regions of Australia, from Melbourne to Tasmania and over to Adelaide and back. Now it’s time to head north and up to the tropics!
Making FSX Missions – Part II
This month in our series on creating missions for FSX, we look at adding specific mission code and then adding images to mission briefings and compiling the mission ready to fly.
Building a Flight Sim Chair
“Like most of you out there I am an avid flight simmer. This being the case I wanted to create a chair that would make the flight simming experience more enjoyable. With the creation of “Chair 2.0” I think I’ve done that. Some of the criteria for building this chair are that it had to be comfortable, fairly easy to do and VERY affordable.”
Bride of a Flight Sim Zombie
“My heart was racing as I heard his cell phone ringing. I had no idea how he would react to a call from me right out of the blue.”
Building the CarterGyro in X-Plane
This, the first of two articles about modeling the CarterGyro in X-Plane, describes the construction of the model itself. Next month the second article will reveal how Python computer code was used to emulate the electro/hydraulic control system.
Cockpit Building Series: Creating Panel Backlighting - Part 1
I am sure that anyone who has started to build a replica cockpit simulator would certainly agree that it is an enormous challenge and a great deal of work to take on. Here is Part 1 of the series that was previously M.I.A.
The Air Cadet Program and Computer Air Simulation Centers – Making Air
Since Computer Air Simulation Centers (CASC) were introduced as part of an optional training program in many Royal Canadian Air Cadet squadrons across the country, the line between ‘virtual’ and ‘reality’ is often blurred when you see the cadets using the Flight Simulator Software.
Meet Your Makers – Holger Sandmann
Since Holger Sandmann’s freeware and commercial projects are so successful, we figured that our readers might want to know a bit more about who the man is behind that name. It’s time to Meet Your Maker!
Flying Trikes
With the release of Microsoft Flight Simulator X we have once again been given new airplanes to experiment with and fly. Among these is an unusual flying machine called an AirCreation Tanarg.
My Favorite Combat Sim
Mike Ray provides a unique look at his favorite combat sim and also looks at carrier landings in his well-known and unique graphical/text layout style.
Round Robin Adventures
We are flying a scheduled flight for CP Air, from Vancouver to San Francisco, and we have a full passenger load!
Bill Stack’s Column
What’s Missing? Microsoft Flight Simulator 10 Doesn’t Have Everything!
From the EDITOR..
Hi folks and welcome to the July issue. We have now entered into the second half of the year, which is traditionally the busier half for new product releases. While there are no new civil aviation simulators on the horizon, there are some combat helo simulations due for release like Pacific Liberation Force. Enemy Engaged 2 has just recently been released. The simulator add-on market is expected to produce bagloads of titles, and there may be a few surprises in the hardware controller market too. Expect a lot of new computing technology to emerge, bigger and faster than ever before, and look for DirectX 10 which should also be released sooner rather than later! It will be an exciting 6 months ahead of us!
I had the chance to play around with the latest X-Plane release the other night and I am always surprised what it offers in terms of physics and fluid simulation. There are definitely no issues with frame rates on standard settings and the virtual world has been greatly improved. While I still prefer the look and feel of the Microsoft Flight Simulator software, a few hours in the X-Plane simulator now and then is a refreshing change!
This issue we welcome back Mike Ray. He has put together an interesting piece (and layout) on his favorite combat simulator. Welcome back Mike! We also have the first article in a new series we are calling “Meet Your Makers!” In this series we will interview some of the best and most influential flight simulator add-on developers so you can get to know the people behind the products we use and fly with every day in our simulators.
That’s about all for now, so find that favorite armchair, kick your feet up, and enjoy the July issue of Computer Pilot Magazine – the world’s only monthly printed flight simulation publication!
