Naha Airport, a former US Air Force base, located on the beautiful island of Okinawa in southwestern Japan.
The US Air Force terminated its use of Naha Base on May 31, 1971, and transferred control of civil aviation to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, which established Naha Airport at the location. The facility management rights of Naha Base were officially transferred from the US military to the Japan Air Self Defense Force in April 1982.
As a famous tourist attraction, Naha Airport handles over 18 million passengers annually, making it the sixth largest airport in Japan in terms of passenger traffic.
The air traffic control at Naha Airport is very special, with the entry (APP), departure (DEP), and some control towers (TWR) including the nearby Kadena Air Force Base, which is also responsible for the control of Kadena Air Force Base.
In addition to military and civilian operations, Naha Airport also provides control services for spacecraft or space shuttles from space, most of which are from NASA.
