Lublin is one of the oldest cities in eastern Poland and the capital of the Lublin Voivodeship. Located near the borders with Ukraine and Belarus, it serves as an important cultural, academic, and economic center of the region. With a population of over 300,000, the city is known for its historic Old Town, major universities, and its role as a regional hub for administration, trade, and education.
Lublin Airport (Port Lotniczy Lublin) (IATA: LUZ, ICAO: EPLB) is a regional international airport serving Lublin and eastern Poland. The airport is located about 10 km east of the city center near the town of Świdnik. It operates a single asphalt runway (07/25) measuring 2520 m × 45 m with paved shoulders and is equipped with a Category I Instrument Landing System and modern airfield lighting. The terminal and apron infrastructure support operations of narrow-body aircraft such as the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 families and allow handling of several aircraft simultaneously.
Construction of the current airport began in 2010 and the facility officially opened on 17 December 2012. The project, partly financed by European Union funds, replaced the former Świdnik airfield (ICAO: EPSW), a grass runway facility used primarily by the nearby aviation manufacturing plant.
The aviation history of Świdnik dates back to 1935, when the original airfield was built as a pilot training center and opened on 4 June 1939 by the Airborne and Antigas Defence League. During World War II the airfield was used by the German Luftwaffe and later by the Soviet Air Force after the Red Army captured Lublin in July 1944.
In 1949 the Polish government established an aviation manufacturing complex next to the airfield, later known as the PZL-Świdnik helicopter factory. Helicopter assembly began in 1956 and full production started in 1957.
Today EPLB serves as an important regional airport connecting eastern Poland with several European destinations, supporting tourism, business travel, and regional economic development.
