YSWS Western Sydney International Airport, officially Nancy-Bird Walton International Airport (ICAO: YSWS, IATA: WSI), is Australia’s first major greenfield airport development in decades. Located in the Badgerys Creek and Luddenham region about 44 km west of Sydney’s CBD, the airport was built to support the long-term aviation needs of Greater Sydney and relieve pressure on Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD), which operates under strict curfew restrictions.
As a curfew-free 24-hour airport, Western Sydney International significantly expands aviation capacity for both passenger and cargo operations. The first development stage includes a 3.7 km runway (05/23) capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft and a modern terminal handling domestic and international traffic. Initial capacity is designed for around 5 million passengers annually, with long-term expansion plans allowing growth to over 80 million passengers by the 2060s.
The airport forms the centerpiece of the Western Sydney Aerotropolis, a major economic development zone integrating aviation, logistics, research, advanced manufacturing, education, and technology industries. The project is expected to generate tens of thousands of jobs and attract substantial investment across the region.
Western Sydney Airport was designed with expansion in mind, including provisions for a second runway, additional terminals, and expanded cargo infrastructure. The terminal architecture incorporates regional design influences and natural materials, while airside infrastructure has been optimized for efficient aircraft operations and reduced taxi times.
Connectivity is ensured through the new M12 motorway, linking the airport directly to Sydney’s road network, and a 23 km metro rail line connecting the airport with surrounding suburban centers and the wider metropolitan area.
Sustainability and innovation are key elements of the airport’s design. The facility incorporates solar power systems, rainwater harvesting, and passive climate control technologies. It is also home to Australia’s first digital air traffic control facility, using high-resolution remote camera systems instead of a conventional tower.
Western Sydney itself is one of Australia’s fastest-growing regions, with a population exceeding 2.5 million residents, and the airport has become a major catalyst for infrastructure and economic development.
For Microsoft Flight Simulator, YSWS Western Sydney Airport MSFS recreates this modern aviation hub with high realism. The scenery includes detailed airport infrastructure, high-resolution ground imagery, custom terminal interiors, and accurately implemented runway lighting, taxiway signage, and navigation aids. Optimized LOD modeling ensures smooth performance while maintaining high visual fidelity, while animated metro trains, service vehicles, jetways, and airport equipment bring the environment to life.
