Fleet History
"The A-4 Skyhawk, was designed by Ed Heinemann for the Douglas Corporation for the US Navy. Nearly 3,000 aircraft had been built when production ended in 1979, many of these having been modified and upgraded to new models. The RNZAF operated the A4-K Skyhawk as its primary fighter/bomber aircraft from 1970 until retiring in 2001. The most significant change for the A4-K was the avionics upgrade in the late 80's under 'Project Kahu'.
The first of the updated aircraft was rolled out for testing in June 1988, while the last returned to service in March 11. The updated installation provides HOTAS and a 'glass' cockpit (2 CRT screens), a HUD, APG-66 radar, a ring laser gyro inertial navigation system, as well as upgraded VOR/ILS equipment and the provision of chaff/flare dispensers. Some of the aircraft here were stationed at Nowra with number 2 squadron before being disbanded and the aircraft put into storage and listed for sale.
As at 2014 all the A4-K and TA-4K fleet have found new homes either in Museums around New Zealand or with 'Drake' in the U.S.A. along with some Aermacchi trainers
