The Boeing Model 40 was a United States mail plane that became the first aircraft built by the Boeing Company to carry passengers. The Model 40 was designed to replace the military surplus de Havillands that had carried the airmail since 1918. Including the first Model 40, 77 Model 40s were built between 1925 and 1932. Its success was instrumental in establishing Boeing as a leader in aviation development and manufacturing.
On February 2, 2008, 80 years after the first Model 40C was delivered, the only airworthy restoration rolled out of the hangars of Pemberton and Sons Aviation in Spokane, Washington. The restoration was the culmination of 9 years work by over 61 volunteers spending approximately 18,000 hours bringing this magnificent aircraft to life.
One year later Golden Age Simulations rolls out our simulation of this great plane for Flight Simulator. Our package presents both the Model 40 C and B-4. The model C is presented in the livery of Pacific Air Transport matching that of the restored aircraft 5339, powered by the Pratt and Whitney Wasp with a constant speed propeller. The B-4 is dressed out in both the livery of United Airlines and Western Air Express and is powered by the Pratt and Whitney Hornet.
Great care has been taken to create as accurate representation of each aircraft as is possible. In the case the C, Addison Pemberton provided input on the cockpit layout and provided a pirep of the handling characteristics of his aircraft. His input was factored into the flight dynamics of the model. The flight dynamics of the B-4 have also been thoroughly researched as well. The model is fully animated and designed to be flown from the VC. Detailed check lists and reference files are included in each aircraft’s kneeboard that represents actual aircraft operations.
The sound files for each aircraft are the work of Flight Simulator sound designer, Mike Hambley. His sound art truly brings these beautiful recreations to life and further adds to the immersive experience of flying these giants of the Golden Age skies
Included in the package is scenery offering, by FSRealscenes.com, of Alhambra Airport, Alhambra, Ca, circa 1930. This airport was the home of the Western Air Express fleet and a hub for mail and passenger traffic during that era.
So, relive the early days of passenger flight, flying the airmail routes of the golden age of aviation with Golden Age Simulation’s Boeing Model 40 for FSX!
This version has been specifically designed for FSX and is not backward compatible with any other previous version of Flight Simulator.
Nicely done. A very old and classic part of airline history. It’s a bit dated sure, but it does look good and flies well also. Only 3 liveries but maybe that’s all there ever was?
I only wish it had a cabin view with the passenger perspective.
