Johannesburg, South Africa's largest city and the capital of Gauteng province, began as a gold mining colony in the 19th century. The sprawling Soweto district was home to Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. Mandela's former residence is now the Mandela House museum. Among Soweto's other museums reminiscent of the struggle to end segregation are the grim Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill, a former prison complex.
