Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and the most populous city in the country. It is also the westernmost capital of the European continent on the Atlantic coast.

Due to its natural and scenic values, both the town and the municipality experienced a surge in popularity that saw it become the preferred destination for Portuguese and foreign elites from the 19th century onwards. The arrival and electrification of the railway were essential for the progress of the municipality, being the main factor for its urbanization from 1930 onwards. Since then, it has grown to assert itself as one of the main suburbs of Lisbon and one of the main tourist destinations in the country, sharing the phenomena of suburbanization and peri-urbanization that took place in the rest of the metropolitan area, evident above all in the interior of the municipality.
