Description
Lyon is the third largest city in France. It is located in the central eastern part of the country at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers, about 470 km south of Paris, 320 km north of Marseille and 55 km east of Saint-Étienne.
The city is known for its gastronomy and historical and architectural landmarks; part of it is registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Lyon was historically an important area for silk production and weaving. The city has played a significant role in the history of cinema: it is where Auguste and Louis Lumière invented the cinematograph. It is also known for its festival of light, the Fête des Lumières, which starts every December 8 and lasts for four days, earning the city the nickname "Capital of Lights".
Economically, Lyon is an important financial center, as well as for the chemical, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. The city contains a major software industry with a special focus on video games, and in recent years it has fostered a growing local startup sector.
