Description
Melbourne is the capital and most populous city in the state of Victoria, as well as being the second most populous urban area in Australia after Sydney.
It is one of the main financial centers in the country, as well as in the Asia-Pacific region.
Founded on August 30, 1835 (in the then colony of New South Wales) by colonists from Launceston, Van Diemen Land, who incorporated the region as a Crown possession in 1837. It was named "Melbourne" by the governor of New South Wales, Sir Richard Bourke, named after the British Prime Minister at the time, William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne.
