Montgomery is the capital of the US state of Alabama and the seat of Montgomery County. It was founded in 1814 with the designation of Fort Montgomery and incorporated as a city on December 3, 1819, becoming the state capital on December 6, 1847. It was also the capital of the Confederate States of America between February 4 and 20. of May 1861.

Between 1955 and 1956, an anti-segregationist boycott took place in Montgomery that sparked the African American civil rights movement.
