Montreal is the largest city in the Canadian province of Quebec and the second most populous municipality in Canada. Originally called Ville-Marie, or "City of Mary", the city was renamed to "Montréal", an archaic version, written in a simplified form, in honor of Monte Royal, a hill located in a park in the center of the city.
Montreal is located for the most part on the Island of Montreal, which takes its name from the same source as the city, and on some much smaller outlying islands. Montreal has a distinct four-season continental climate with hot summers and cold, snowy winters.
The video game industry has been booming in Montreal since 1997, coinciding with the opening of Ubisoft Montreal. Recently, the city has attracted game developers and studios from world-leading publishers such as EA, Eidos Interactive, BioWare, Behavior Interactive, Strategy First, THQ and Gameloft, mainly because of the quality of local expert work and tax credits offered to corporations.
