Beijing, formerly known as Yanjing or Beiping, is the capital, municipality directly under the central government, national central city, and mega city of the People's Republic of China. It has been approved by the State Council as the political center, cultural center, international exchange center, and technological innovation center of China. It is also one of China's historical and cultural cities and ancient capitals, and a world-class city.
