The Taiwan Strait was a part of the ancient land of China during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras. Taiwan is located in a collision zone where two major plates, the Eurasian Plate and the Philippine Sea Plate of the Pacific Plate, experience significant subduction and uplift movements. The two major plates move in opposite directions, namely the Eurasian plate moving towards the southeast and the Pacific plate (Philippine plate) moving towards the northwest, touching and colliding with each other, causing complex and intense crustal movements. The intense subduction movement of the Pacific Plate (Philippine Plate) has led to the development of huge faults that are still active in the plate contact zone, resulting in a steep terrain and topography on the east coast of Taiwan compared to the west coast.
Taiwan Island is a mountainous island. The central and eastern half of the island are mostly high mountains with an altitude of one kilometer to over three thousand meters, accounting for about one-third of the entire island. Low mountains, hills, plateaus, and coastal plains below one thousand meters and over one hundred meters each account for about one-third. In the mountainous area of the eastern half, there are 62 peaks with an altitude of over 3000 meters, of which 22 are above 3500 meters. It is rare in the world to have so many high mountains concentrated on such a small island.
