StrataWx is the modern alternative to Active Sky. It feeds live atmospheric data into MSFS 2024 in real time: winds and temperature aloft, cloud decks, precipitation, pressure, and aviation hazards, written straight into the running sim through its in-game weather engine. No file swaps, no menu fiddling, and none of the abrupt jumps of older weather engines. The weather updates continuously and eases into place while you fly, anywhere on Earth, because StrataWx is built on global forecast models rather than US-only feeds.
What sets it apart
Truly live injection. StrataWx writes to MSFS 2024's in-memory weather API (updateTempWeatherPreset) from an in-game toolbar panel, the only path that updates active weather without a reload. It auto-engages the moment you open the app.
Smooth transitions. Custom per-channel smoothing (coast, then ease out, with a cold-start snap so you load straight into correct conditions) is purpose-built to eliminate the abrupt jumps of older weather engines like Active Sky.
Multi-layer clouds. StrataWx carries far more than the old three-deck limit, probing the sim's real ceiling at runtime instead of assuming it.
Global coverage. Winds, temperatures, precipitation, and computed hazards (icing, turbulence, freezing levels, convective bands) are equal fidelity worldwide via Open-Meteo and GFS, with international SIGMET, AIRMET, and PIREP advisories.
Three modes. Live for current real weather, Historical to replay any past instant from the ERA5 reanalysis archive, and Sandbox to author your own conditions.
Flight-plan aware. Pull a SimBrief route and preview real weather at each waypoint's planned altitude, with winds, temperatures, and hazards fix by fix.
Cockpit-grade UI. An EFIS-styled dashboard with cloud-deck tables, wind ladders, vertical profiles, a basemap radar view, and live METAR and ATIS readouts, in dark and light themes.

Requirements
StrataWx is a lightweight companion app for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 (PC, Windows). It talks to the sim through the in-game weather API and a toolbar panel, so it has no meaningful hardware demands beyond the simulator itself. If your system runs MSFS 2024, it runs StrataWx.
- Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 installed and running (PC version)
- Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11
- An active internet connection (for live weather data)
I did two flights after loading SimBrief. Even though it was set to Live Weather, the conditions differed from the actual real-time weather of the area. The sky was covered in almost 100% clouds way too often, and the shapes and densities changed too frequently. As of now, I see no reason to give this add-on a high score. It makes me doubt whether these problems can actually be improved in future updates.
For such a young app, it has accomplished a lot. Started off a bit glitchy, but after a number of updates, it has turned into an amazing app. The weather it provides, specially the cloud and wind layers, takes me back to the early MSFS 2020 days before SU5 and SU7, when the internal weather was working, as it was meant to.
Not as jerky or as abrupt now, as its current competitors. It now has very smooth cloud and weather transitions and is closer to the real weather.
The Sandbox is great tool, where you can select certain weather conditions or create your own, by moving condition sliders.
The UI looks amazing and very organized. With each update, something new is added. The information it provides, is organized in a professional format. It doesn't just creates the weather, but also informs you of the current conditions/radar, that also, just not helps you plan your flight but also informs you of changes, as you progress through your flight plan.
A very nice start and the app can only get better. The devs listen, very responsive and fixes the bugs quickly. :)
Had a rough start at launch with heavy and rapid wind direction changes on every FL it seemed, now though it has been fixed and so far the transitions are very smooth indeed, clouds are gradually changing and there is no stutter on my system. compared to ACTIVESky it is a worthy contender at I'm sure it will further improve upon.
Somehow my REX Atmos is crashing when I want to open REX, I'm sur it must be a error on my side, Atmos is working correctly though as it should. In combination with REX Atmos STRATAWX is nicely bringing weather into your sim.
keep up the good work devs.
