DAKAR OUAKAM AIRFIELD 1935 Capital of A.O.F.

In 1935, Ouakam airfield near Dakar was one of the first strategic aviation sites on the West African coast.

Perched by the Atlantic and surrounded by sandy terrain, it served as a vital stopover for pioneering flights linking Europe to South America.

At that time, the field was still rudimentary, with a simple runway on hard-packed ground, a windsock, and a few hangars. Pilots flying Latécoère and Aéropostale routes often landed here to refuel and prepare for the long ocean crossing, making Ouakam a key landmark in early transatlantic aviation.
