ANTS AIRPLANES - DRIFTER ULTRALIGHT MSFS

ANTS AIRPLANES - DRIFTER ULTRALIGHT MSFS

This is the best open-cockpit ultralight in the sim at the moment, hands-down - and I've compared it to 4 others that I have. Ant's airplanes have always been a joy to learn and fly in FSX/P3D, and I'm so happy to see this first release for MSFS. The Drifter just hits a great spot and feels right, for what it is. It is very light, stable and forgiving under normal flight conditions, but does not feel overpowered and will not treat you kindly if you exceed its limitations. It's a breeze for sightseeing and exploring if you treat it correctly, with an outstanding view out front, but it is not an aerobatic machine. It really does feel like you're flying something very small and accessible. The model is very good, and has a solid set of features - chocks, tube covers, an optional GPS, a totally unique com/nav radio, two different options for windscreen reflections, and of course the float variant. There is a tablet that allows you to control all the key features. I could not find any obvious flaws in the 1.00 version - it works great and feels right. Highly recommended - if a good-quality, realistic-performing ultralight is what you're looking for in your sim, of course.

WING42 - BLÉRIOT XI MSFS

WING42 - BLÉRIOT XI MSFS

This airplane is utterly brilliant. Don't be intimidated - even its "RIP edition" (one of the three variants, with the most difficult controls) is not as impossible to fly as it sounds, and the more practical Gnome-engined version is even somewhat pleasant to operate for cross-country hops! However flying it is still a whole different ball game from what you might be used to - and it truly feels nothing like any of the stock airplanes in MSFS, or indeed any of the add-ons so far. This plane is a handful, and has virtually no safety margins built into it - or instruments for that matter. It's just you and the unkind forces of nature... Visually it's pretty nice. There are some glitches I've noticed when using external camera (wing warping controls cause the wings to do something they shouldn't be able to!) which I'm sure will be quickly fixed up and doesn't detract from the experience. Flying it from the cockpit is extremely enjoyable - surprisingly, this actually actually offers a near-unobstructed view in most directions, since there's very little airplane to speak of between you and the sim world (just a sparse wooden frame and a pair of warping canvas wings). Doing anything in this airplane feels like an accomplishment unto itself, so even short flights are very rewarding. Yes, you will be fighting seemingly unstoppable oscillations during flight with near-inadequate controls - but that is exactly the correct behaviour. Flying a straight line for even a few seconds is a real feat for this one. In short - if you love early aviation, or just want something really different in your sim - I think this Bleriot is a must-have!

CLOUD STUDIO - UUML SEVERKA AIRFIELD V1 MSFS

CLOUD STUDIO - UUML SEVERKA AIRFIELD V1 MSFS

Great little airport! A perfect companion to Drzewiecki Design's Moscow city scenery, if you're mainly interested in light aircraft and VFR flying. It's far enough from Moscow to feel rural - but close enough that you could be buzzing the Kremlin within half an hour of takeoff in even the slowest planes. The airfield definitely does not feel generic - all the buildings and objects look custom-designed. I have not been to this airfield in real life so I cannot speak to how accurate it is, but the details - the Putin posters, beer ads, signs, equipment boxes and fences - all have an unmistakable local Russian flavour. Textures are generally sharp and consistent; I especially like the pavement, which definitely feels like a step up from default airports. The only small negatives would be the rather small size and scope (it's just the little airfield, there's not been any changes to anything on the landscape around it), and some minor texture issues (a few places where there was flicker/pop-in, especially of the ground texture) - with the grass around the airstrip having a noticeably different colour from the rest of the terrain in the area. I'd definitely not jarring, but could be blended a bit better. Great product otherwise - worth the price, and with just a little bit more work on that ground texture, it'll easily be worth the title of a 5-star GA airfield!

DRZEWIECKI DESIGN - MOSCOW LANDMARKS MSFS

DRZEWIECKI DESIGN - MOSCOW LANDMARKS MSFS

This one is a real masterpiece, and totally worth the price! It completely overwrites a large portion of central Moscow; while some of the buildings and landmarks are lower-resolution than stock MSFS objects, they are better than photogrammetry, and blend very well with the game's objects overall. Many landmarks, meanwhile, are MUCH more detailed than what you typically find in MSFS - the Ostankino TV tower is a definite highlight, Moscow City (the skyscraper group) is as strange of a mix of styles as you'd expect, and are the easter eggs (such as Putin himself!) are worth hunting for! The airport improvements are great as well, and would have been worth the price on their own. While obviously buzzing the Kremlin and doing (non-realistic) low-level urban VFR are what this pack might seem to encourage, what I was actually most impressed by is what it did to the feeling of more distant approaches to the large Moscow airports. The custom buildings have a far, far longer draw distance than default MSFS buildings and landmarks - and because how many there are in this pack, you get a very believable and distinct Moscow skyline when approaching from a distance. You can see all the buildings from more than 30 nm distance, and that is a big plus even for airliner flying - making it no longer feel generic. Oh, and I have noticed absolutely no impact on performance, and no obvious bugs or graphical glitches. Everything is well-optimized. Excellent product!
