Lhasa Gonggar Airport is located at Gyazuling of the Gonggar County. It is built on the bank of the magnificent Yarlung Tsangpo River (the Brahmaputra River). At an elevation of 3,500m (11500 ft.) above sea level, the airport is one of the highest in the world. Its runway, with airport rank 4E, at 4,000 meters (13,000 ft.) with a width of 45 meters (148 ft.), is designed to handle wide-bodied aircraft in the thin Tibetan air. The airport can fully accommodate jumbo jets like Boeing 747 and Airbus 340-300 to take off and land.
Lhasa Gonggar Airport was upgraded in 2001 and started to serve on January 1st, 2004. The newly built apron can park 5 Airbus 340s or 7 Boeing 757s at a time. The terminal area is about 25000 m² and has the facility to check in 1,300 passengers per hour during peak hours. A new runway (4000m*45m) marked 09L-27R has been built and the former runway is used for taxiing purpose.
Pilots landing at Lhasa Gonggar Airport must be specially trained in handling maneuvers at landing at the high altitude of 3,700 meters (12,100 ft.). Given the frequency of strong air currents picking up in the afternoon most flights into the airport are scheduled in the morning.
