Kumamoto Airport (熊本空港, Kumamoto Kūkō) (IATA : KMJ, ICAO : RJFT), also known as Aso Kumamoto Airport (阿蘇くまもと空港, Aso Kumamoto Kūkō) who reflects its proximity to Mount Aso, one of Japan's most active volcanoes and a popular tourist destination. Located in Mashiki, Japan at 15km of Kumamoto city center,The airport accommodated 3,241,633 Domestic and International passengers in 2015. With it's 3000m (9843ft) Runway, the airport is home of various activities like General and Commercial aviation but also The Sojo University Flight school and the Kumamoto Prefecture Disaster Relief Aviation Center as well as military with the JGSDF Vice-Camp Takayubaru. Following the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake which severely damaged the airport, Kumamoto International Airport Co., Ltd. began developing a new terminal building which was planned to withstand strong earthquakes. It was also made to integrates both domestic and international flights. The new terminal building officially opened on March 23, 2023.
