StrataWx is the modern alternative to the legacy X-Plane weather engines. It feeds live atmospheric data into X-Plane 12 in real time: winds and temperatures aloft, cloud decks, precipitation, pressure, turbulence, and aviation hazards, written straight into the running sim's own regional atmosphere. No plugin, no files dropped into your X-Plane folder, no menu fiddling, and none of the abrupt jumps of older weather engines. The weather updates continuously and eases into place while you fly, anywhere on Earth, because StrataWx is built on global forecast models rather than US-only feeds.

What sets it apart

  • It writes the real atmosphere. StrataWx does not nudge a uniform preset. It writes X-Plane 12's own regional weather state through the stock Web API: a full 13-layer wind column at true MSL altitudes, temperature and dewpoint columns with the tropopause, and up to three volumetric cloud layers with real bases, tops, coverage, and cloud type.
  • Zero install into the sim. Everything runs from the desktop app over X-Plane's built-in local Web API. Nothing to copy into Resources/plugins, nothing to reinstall after a sim update.
  • Turbulence you actually feel. Per-altitude turbulence is mapped onto the ride itself, with clear-air and convective bands taken from the column model and thermal activity driven by the convective analysis.
  • Altimetry done properly. Pressure is injected as a true sea-level reduction through the actual column temperature rather than the raw altimeter setting, which is worth several hundred feet of altimetry at high-elevation fields.
  • Smooth transitions. Per-channel smoothing and slew limiting, with a cold-start snap so you load straight into correct conditions instead of watching the sky settle.
  • Four modes. Live for current real weather, Historical to replay any past instant from the ERA5 reanalysis archive, Sandbox to author your own conditions, and Hybrid to mix authored weather over a live base.
  • Global coverage. Winds, temperatures, precipitation, and computed hazards (icing, turbulence, freezing levels, convective bands) are equal fidelity worldwide via Open-Meteo and GFS, with international SIGMET, AIRMET, and PIREP advisories.
  • Flight-plan aware. Pull a SimBrief route or load X-Plane's native FMS plan and preview real weather at each waypoint's planned altitude, with winds, temperatures, and hazards fix by fix.
  • Cockpit-grade UI. An EFIS-styled dashboard with cloud-deck tables, wind ladders, vertical profiles, a basemap radar view, an ND//WX reflectivity scope with a 64 NM grid and 17 NM look-ahead, and live METAR and ATIS readouts, in dark and light themes.

Requirements

StrataWx is a lightweight companion app for X-Plane 12 (PC, Windows). It talks to the sim through X-Plane's built-in local Web API, so it installs nothing into your X-Plane folder and has no meaningful hardware demands beyond the simulator itself. If your system runs X-Plane 12, it runs StrataWx.
