Bournemouth airport is located four miles north of Bournemouth. It was originally "RAF Hurn" and had a typical wartime layout. During the next few decades the airport was used by various charter airlines, and provided regular flights to the Channel islands. Bournemouth airport also developed a large aircraft manufacturing area which was used to build Vickers Varsities, Viscounts and finally BAC1-11 aircraft. This site is now used for aircraft maintenance. The College of air traffic control was located near the airport, and was used for over 50 years before closing in 2011.
Bournemouth flights have decreased from its 2008-2010 peak, but it is currently served by Ryanair, Loganair, EasyJet and TUI Airways.
