Beschreibung
One of the UKs most historic airport dating back to the first world war where is was used as a front line station. After the war the aerodrome at Rochford temporary when back to farmland but was revived in 1933 when it became Britain’s first municipal airport.
Southends most successful period for passengers was between 1961-1970 when it was used by Channel islands to ferry passengers and cars to the
continent with the classic Carvair aircraft (Converted Dakotas). Passenger numbers then reduced during the following years, mainly being used as a GA airfield with maintenance facilities.
In 2008 the airport was purchased by the Stobart Group and the airport started a new life with a brand new terminal and aircraft parking stands . Today EasyJet and Flybe are the main airlines operating up to 30 flights a day increasing passengers numbers to over 1millions passengers a year.
