Embark on your most realistic flight to date, with Wing42's (revolutionary) Boeing 247D. Developed in 1933, this aircraft set the standard for a new generation of airliners. Gone were the days of wood-and-canvas contraptions, now the future awaits with Boeing's first-of-a-kind modern airliner! Features such as a retractable landing gear, cantilevered wings, and a top speed of over *190 miles per hour, undoubtedly make the 247D a remarkable aircraft with historic significance.

The Wing42 Boeing 247D is the first aircraft in MSFS to fully implement a radio range navigation module that will have you "flying the beam." So attune your ears and decipher the code, it's by no means an easy feat, but it's all geared towards giving you an experience like no other. If you are looking for immersion that simulates a wide range of behaviours and effects, then prepare to have your hat blown off with our custom-coded Prop-o-Tronic Physics Engine. It uses real-world physics to simulate a rich and interactive flight with significant consequences - so don't be ill-prepared!

    Full list of Features

    3D Model

High fidelity 3d model with high-resolution PBR textures throughout the aircraft.

    Flight Model

Super-realistic flight model, based on aerodynamic analysis and numerous sources from operating procedures to pilot reports. The flight model for the Boeing 247D was meticulously developed by aerodynamics expert Pamela Brooker, verified and tested by seasoned pilots.

    System Simulation

The Boeing 247D features our first implementation of the Prop-o-Tronic physics engine in Microsoft Flight Simulator. Systems accurately simulated by Prop-o-Tronic are:

    • Oil System
Viscosity, temperature, 4 different oil grades are all simulated for dozens of parts in the engine.
    • Electrical System
Real-world engineering calculations to accurately simulate voltages and currents. Make sure to pack some extra fuses, because they can pop during flight.
    • Realistic Heat-exchange
Instead of relying on MSFS lookup-tables, heat is calculated using real-world engineering formulas that define the interaction between all the different parts of the engines. Heat is exchanged via convection, conduction and radiation.
    • Much, much more

    Animations

Custom animations for all moving parts and controls, from the light switch in the wash room to the vibration of the antenna wire in the wind.

Ground operations and our virtual clipboard

Our virtual clipboard is used to install various ground equipment, remove the cowling of the Pratt&Whitney S1H1-G engines, load the aircraft with passengers, cargo, mail, fuel and oil, and get the engines started. We also provide some key-reference data for your flight, in case you don’t have your checklists handy.

    Realistic engine start-up procedure

The 247 had a peculiar engine starter, consisting of a flywheel with a hand-crank and clutch, both operated by the ground crew. You can either have your virtual ground crew do their job, or get your hands dirty by hand-cranking the engines yourself.

    Sound

The add-on comes with a custom WWise sound pack, carefully designed by the professional audio mastermind Zak Spence. It includes amazing engine sounds, wind effects, audible controls and much more for a most immersive experience. Hear the engines roar, the equipment rumble, the radio crack and the switches click.

    Fully functional Radio Range Navigation

The Wing42 Boeing 247D features an now outdated radio navigation system called “radio range”. The pilot of a historic 1930s aircraft would dial in a frequency on the radio and listen to the changing Morse code transmitted to find his way. It is an annoying and challenging, yet very rewarding way of navigating the skies. We included almost 700 historical radio stations (around 400 of them located in the U.S.A.) and outfitted the aircraft with a Bendix MR1B wireless controller.

But fear not! We also provide plenty of information in form of manuals and video tutorials to get you started!

    Custom FX

Utilizing the new effects system where possible, the Boeing 247D comes with custom made effects. From engine smoke to reading lamps in the cabin, the Boeing has them all!

    Documentation

We provide extensive learning material to help you familiarize yourself with the aircraft. Included are two training manuals from the 1940s to familiarize yourself with old-fashioned radio navigation.

    Liveries

The Wing42 Boeing 247D comes in nine different variations:

    • Fictional Wing42 livery
    • United Air Lines NC13361 (1933 livery)
    • Precipitation Control N3977C

This is a full on study level aircraft from the early era of airline flight. You get a completely functioning aircraft with as close to the real thing as is possible. It is not easy and if you don’t know what you’re doing you’ll end up flying into an emergency pretty quick. No auto pilot, no radio, no modern gizmos of any kind. Just you and the plane (unless you fly the beam) and your wits. It’s not hard to mess up something with severe consequences. I made the mistake of not reading at least the basics and most important systems info thinking my decades of sim experience would be enough. It almost was, but I ended up losing my right engine to neglect and barely got down safely before the left went out. Next flight I had fires, and the third I just lost both engines and all electrical in flight forcing a water landing. Frustrated? NO! This is great. A challenge is offered here that makes me super happy about the purchase.  Not only are you getting a very detailed set of systems with by the numbers design but also a beautifully crafted aircraft that looks so good every where you look!  On par with PMDG in my opinion but half the cost. You just can’t beat the deal here. The 247D is priced like something that is made very simple, but delivers instead something incredibly complex, pretty, fun, real, and educational. If that all sounds like something interesting to you and are prepared to learn how to fly it, then it’s a no brainer! Nothing else is priced like this that offers so much! A true gem.

tl;dr - Highly recommend. Lots of fun. You get a ton of bang for your buck. This aircraft is a true gem. I still can't get over the price for what you get. Random failures modeled and working systems for under $20? Yes please. It took me a bit to figure out the quirks of starting the engines without using the easy mode/assistance on the clipboard of an EFB. But the first time I was able to, it was pretty satisfying. There is state saving, so it's also a good idea to actually go through the shutdown procedures. Overall, it's definitely one of my favorites. It's a nice rendition of what it was like to be flying at the speed of smell from Boston to New York in the 1930's. On a fun side note, I know my grandmother flew in one of these when she was a teenager. It was a trip from Boston to Florida for vacation. To me, it's interesting to think about the kind of planning that was involved for the pilots for a distance like that, given the fact that it had to be a multi-leg trip during a time when airports were limited and navigation aids even more limited than that. I liked the idea of trying to recreate that. It would make for an interesting pseudo-bush trip of sorts with long hops between airports in MSFS.

Incredible plane with insane level of detail and packed with features. Wonderful flight model and systems. Flying the "beam" is an amazing vintage experience. Yes, the developer has disappeared and there was never any update since release. But I took the plane up just recently (April 2023) and it performed wonderfully. The only thing in my mind that needs fixing is the oil temperature not being accurate. But you can manage the engines via the oil pressure gauge instead and do just fine. There's also a mod to fix it on flightsim.to. Don't sleep on this plane, it's excellent.

Buyer beware - website from developer has lost content behind the front page and the developer has never responded to any of my support requests. No updates to fix obvious bugs since release either. Unfortunate - as the plane is fantastic. Hopefully the developer is OK - apparently one person shop.

I bought this beautiful piece of aviation history in the MSFS marketplace and cannot emphasize strong enough how well and authentic the developers have recreated this beauty in the virtual world. 10/10 recommendation for every pilot who is looking for a little challenge engine-management wise and for those who want to get a feel for how nice and "true" those airplanes handled back in the days!

Purchased elsewhere, but I want to give a shout out! Absolutely 5 stars, it's a steal for this money. As a scenery developer, I can immediately spot when a developer truly loves the product he/she creates. If you've read the blog, you could see how much work went into this one, including hand placing 100s of rivets. The aircraft itself is a labour of love. Unlike (thankfully IMHO) Local Legends, this plane comes with original 1930's instrumentation. No GPS to ruin the immersion (not even VOR, only the radio range system used at the time, which is a big part of this addon with full tutorials). You can even listen original 1930s music if you tune your radio right. At night, the radio-luminescent instruments start to fade after a while, and you have to recharge them by turning the cockpit lighting on. And you can use the soap dispenser in the toilet. Yes, heard it right, it's that detailed! It has a really cool clipboard system to deal with loadouts, engine start, etc. This wonderful addon transports you back into the 30's, and it's a true homeage to the original plane, with incredible detail! Still would have bought for 3x the price, it's that good, but beware, if you're into glass cockpits, and autopilot flying the plane for you, then this aircraft is not for you. However if you're up to the challange to conquer this beauty and soar majesticly through the sky, while trying your best to stay on course using stone age navigation, then BUY IT! NOW! What are waiting for???

this was a huge suprise! This plane is so cheap considering everything that comes with it and this is hands down my best flight experience. I highly recommend you watch someone fly this bird on youtube cause there is way to much to explain with just letters!
