Smara international airport, formerly known as Johannes IV International Airport (IATA: ASM, ICAO: HHAS), is the international airport of Asmara, the capital of Eritrea. This is the largest airport in the country, and as of the spring of 2017, it was the only airport to receive regular services.
The airport was built by the Italian colonial authorities in 1922. It is the first facility to be opened in Eritrea, Italy. It is the main local military airport. In the mid-1930s, the airport (known as Aeroporto civil Di Asmara) began to provide civil and commercial flights.
