Skill Tester! Flying the Samos Approach
Mention the Greek Islands to the average person and they think of beautiful blue seas, island beach paradises, holidays, sun, and generally having a good time. Mention the Greek Islands to an "aviation enthusiast" and they will think of the approach into Samos. In the first instalment of this two-part article we will cover the basics of flying into Samos in various aircraft, and indeed we will cover the real approach used these days, which is a visual approach with no plate to guide you!
Horton’s Hints for FSX
A special extended edition of Horton’s Hints for Flight Simulator X. Find out all you need to know about using and getting the most out of the latest Microsoft simulator version!
Flying the Beechcraft Baron
Today you can buy a new Baron for something over a million US dollars. Like the Bonanza, the Baron is essentially the same airplane as it has always been, various models differing only in performance, seating and avionics. The mission remains the same; provide the individual who needs travel speed and flexibility with an IFR capable airplane that is fast, comfortable and affordable.
Birth of a Virtual Airline – The ATP Experience
“Joe imagined getting a group of pilots together to fly integrated routes with the challenge of maintaining a schedule and accomplishing gate turns in 35 minutes or less… His goal was to attempt to replicate the pressures of flying these airline schedules using live dispatch –and he called it The ATP Experience (ATPX).”
Rants Follow Raves
“A completely new and innovative gaming experience,” the reviewers said. “The most significant addition to date,” they went on. This 10th version of Microsoft Flight Simulator, “FSX,” is impressive, but not for all the reasons heralded by the reviewers prior to its release…
Airborne Wordsmiths
Ever looked up into a deep blue summer’s sky and seen a tiny black dot, high overhead, writing cloud-words in the sky? How difficult would it be to write an advert in the virtual sky of Flight Sim? David Smith decided to give it a go.
P06D – An X-Plane Challenge: Part 1
“Late last year I received a request from some graduate students at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, for help in X–Plane simulation of a design project they were assigned. This is the first of two articles that describe the way it was done…”
Round Robin Adventures
We are flying a charter for the Montreal Canadiens of the National Hockey League. This is a common and regular flight for the team as they will play a game against the Boston Bruins one evening and fly to New York the next day to play the New York Rangers and then proceed back home on a night charter after the game in New York.
From the EDITOR..
Greetings, and welcome to the March 2007 edition of Computer Pilot Magazine.
In this issue we had to postpone a couple of the planned articles as we could not get them together in time to make the deadline. Luckily we have some great replacement articles on offer, including an ILS flight into Melbourne International, and an article on an interesting X-Plane project looking at the P06D aircraft. “What P06D aircraft?” you say… Flip to the article and check it out. Interesting stuff indeed!
On another note, I’ve been using the Google Earth™ software recently to help with my virtual flying. How so? Well, when you fly into a new region, or make an approach for the first time into a new airport, it is difficult to guess what you might expect. Sure you can check the charts and fly the published approaches and be relatively “safe” but by having a chance to visually inspect the region or immediate approach areas prior to flying it really helps to visualize the approach in your mind. Google Earth is the perfect tool for such a job. Simply zoom to your intended destination, and then tilt the image to discover a 3D world complete with high resolution images! The perfect tool to help your mind visualize your next approach. Best of all, the basic software is totally free. You can grab it at http://earth.google.com/
My approaches and landings, especially visual, non-instrument ones into unfamiliar airports have improved dramatically since using this flight “planning” method. Try it for yourself!
Well, I’ve run out of waffle room for this month, so please relax and enjoy this month’s offering of the latest and greatest flight sim content on the planet!
Enjoy the March issue of Computer Pilot Magazine – The World’s Favorite monthly flight simulation resource!
