And being a purposely-built rugged design, you are not confined to just large sophisticated airports but can also take your passengers and cargo to and from out-of-the-way places, sometimes (e.g. Barra, Scotland) with no runway at all!

Unusually designed as both a single or dual pilot airliner, depending on requirements, this aircraft will give you opportunities to fly worldwide in a great variety of routes and places, in both civilian and military roles, just as the real Herons are famous for doing.

History:

The De Havilland DH.114 Heron first flew on 10 May 1950. It was a development of the twin-engine De Havilland Dove/Devon, featuring a stretched fuselage and an increase from two to four engines. The Heron was first designed with a fixed undercarriage, later upgraded with retracting undercarriage, coupled with reliable un-geared un-supercharged Gipsy Queen 30 engines. It was designed as a rugged, conventional low-wing monoplane that could be used on regional and commuter routes, the emphasis on rugged simplicity, to produce an economical aircraft that could also be used in isolated and remote areas that did not possess modern airports.

The Heron was not a great commercial success, primarily due to being underpowered, making revenue earning a challenge. After production ceased in 1963, several companies, recognizing the great potential of the Heron, undertook to re-engine the design, the most notable being that of the Riley Aircraft Corporation who installed Continental IO-520 power plants (not covered in this package). This enabled a great number of Herons to keep flying profitably well into the 1980's.

150 were built, exported to approximately 30 countries, in both civilian and military roles.

I really like this old plane. Slow as it is I feel like they really did a good job simulating it. Be prepared this is a super slow aircraft considering it has 4 engines. My best cruise with a typical load was around 152 mph at 7000 feet. The old A/P held nicely and it was an enjoyable flight. The overall appearance is quite good inside and out. The audio is equally well done, maybe a little understated for my tastes but nothing the volume control can’t fix. A great choice for flying around high detail scenery areas like Aerosofts Madeira & LaPalma. The slow speed makes you appreciate the views a bit more. Excellent views from the detailed cabin and lav.

This is a great plane. I just Love it! It behaves as I assume it should do. Very easy on FPS. Realistically weak Engines but that is as it was on DH.114 (easy on climb or she will start to shake in your hand) Good instrumentation, all you need for IFR. (Nav1,Nav2,DME,ADF,AP) First flight test I put Vor/Dme on Nav2 and ILS on Nav1 and ADF on closest NDB. It all works just great, and very easy to set the digits on the radios, (not as on some other addons) Engines feels right, you have to "nurse" the throttles and proppitch or she will stutter, very much like on A2A Stratocruiser wich is another of my favorites. Good VC with both nose and wings visible from inside and the cabin views are plenty with good sight through those big cabin windows. The texture on the plane could be higher, (like the shine on the "dashboard" on the PMDG 737) but that is if you look hard for something to complain over :) It is still Very good compared to most addons and I ten times, rather take this with the very high FPS you get. This is Absolutely one of the best addons if you like "old school" flying as I do!
