L-4's on floats were used in almost every theatre of operations in WWII (perhaps most notable in Italy, following the Salerno landings), and their history parallels its wheeled version in many areas. This expansion pack is designed to complete the original L-4 package, which can be found here, although it is also a complete stand-alone package in every regard.

General L-4 History:

The history of the L-4 is best summed up by Ken Wakefield, author of "The Fighting Grasshoppers" and "Lightplanes at War", who graciously contributed the following overview of this aircraft:

"The Piper L-4 Grasshopper of WW2 was the military version of the highly popular pre-war J3 Cub, by which name it was more widely known to service personnel. Of the 5,500 L-4 variants produced between 1942 and 1945, some went to liaison squadrons and of the USAAF, but the vast majority went to US Army Ground Forces, for use as Air Observation Posts (Air OPs) with the Field Artillery. In both air and ground forces, the L-4 was also used as a flying Jeep, among other things carrying priority mail and personnel between HQs and command posts. Its Continental engine produced only 65hp, yet the L-4's excellent short field performance enabled it to operate from the smallest of improvised airstrips, including roads, adjacent to command posts.

Unlike most other combat aircraft, the L-4 was unarmed and unarmoured. It was one of the smallest aircraft of WW2 and, with a cruising speed of only 75 mph, it was the slowest. Nevertheless, it has been claimed that a single L-4, directing the fire power of an entire Division, could bring a greater weight of explosives to bear on a target then any other aircraft of that period. With the exception of the atomic bomb carrying B-29 Superfortress, no other single aircraft had the destructive capability of the diminutive L-4. It was most widely used in Europe, where more than 2,700 served with the Field Artillery, and of these nearly 900 were lost through enemy action or in accidents. Of those that survived the war, about 150 were shipped back to the US, most of the remainder eventually being sold to civilian purchasers in Britain, France, Switzerland, Denmark and elsewhere in Europe. More than 60 years on many of these are still flying with, in recent years, an increasing number being restored to their original military configuration and markings. A truly remarkable 'warbird', long to be remembered."

So successful was the L-4 that it's military use continued on through to the Korean War, and as recently as Vietnam. Today, hundreds still fly on as civilian light aircraft, some as meticulously restored military aircraft and others in colourful civilian schemes - although it is not known if any are on floats.

Features:

The model contains several refinements over the original L-4 release models, including all-DXT compressed textures, for optimal performance (coming in at approximately 1/3 the size of earlier L-4 versions).

  • Two paint schemes: WWII Italy, and 1949 Civil Air Patrol
  • Fully clickable and workable cockpit overall;
  • Luminescent gauge dials for night flying, just like the original;
  • Accurate Edo 1320 floats, with retractable and steerable water rudder;
  • Authentic flight dynamics;
  • Animated pilot;
  • All aircraft come with pop-up hand-held radio, GPS and Transponder, for ease of use in FSX.
  • Paint Kit

Please note: The Manual and Paint Kit can be found in the "...Microsoft Flight Simulator X/SimObjects/Airplanes/ L-4 Grasshopper Liaison - Floats" folder.

To install into Prepar3D, just re-name the installer destination folder to your current Prepar3D location.

Note: Some of the scenery in the screenshots is from the payware "Dillingham - Hawaii", by Bill Womack, which is available at all your favourite payware sites.

Rather well done. I was skeptical at first but it flies nice, it's modeled nice, textures are good and on top of that it has a cool and unique custom efb smart phone with apps (weather, gps, notepad)Even comes with a well modeled fuel truck and transport car for those who like extra immersion. All in all you can tell the dev put passion into this XA42.

First I’d like to confirm that this is fully compatible with FSX Steam Ed. You only need to direct the install to you FSX Steam root folder which is very easy to do. There aren’t a lot of Russian military fighters to choose from or compare this to but this is definitely the best you can buy. The modeling of this SU27 is really quite good. Excellent exterior with reflections and shine as well as detailed aircraft modeling. All switches and panels in the cockpit are 3D. No sections that are just 2d photos pasted into position (like AFS Designs SU planes) while all switches, dials and knobs are 3d, only a handfuls are actually clickable. Only the most important can be clicked and the rest are not simulated at all. At least the VC is accurate and looks great! The Mach indicator in the Airspeed dial doesn’t seem to work. For example when I am at fl360 going 1200 kmh the Mach ready should read approximately (based on conversion charts and speed converter applications taking pressure, temp etc in to consideration) Mach 1.6 but is actually blank at the needle point. The AoA limiter allows for the most stable flight behaviors and forgives excessive stick input. Turn it off and the plane becomes vastly more maneuverable but also less forgiving of extreme movements, but is the only way to perform a “cobra”. With the limiter off, it becomes far more easy to accidentally enter high speed aerodynamic stalls and uncontrolled rolls and spins. When that happens you can hit the “auto recover” button and the plane will usually recover itself even if the pilot blacks out. The overall flight model feels very different from other jet (like F15, F14 etc) fighters of the era making for a nice change of pace if you’re used to American types. The audio is very cool! The engines sound as powerful as they should. Very nice afterburner effects and unique audio set adds to the overall immersion. Turn it up! Overall this is the best SU27 I can find. While little of the systems are simulated (typical of most planes of this type anyway) you get the most important and can enjoy the flight and extreme maneuvering capabilities just fine. It’s priced well all things considered. Excellent frame rates! Based on use with FSX Steam Edition Win 10 3.3ghz i7 16GB ram Intel UHD630 integrated GPU

I’d been using a freeware MYNN until this. Significant upgrade. Well worth the money.. Great rendition, smooth framerates. Very pleased. The only critique is the former runway that is now isolated taxiway is lit up like a runway.

Great addon with an awesome developer. Only downside is that SimMarket only offers downloads through their app.

Thank you Dino for this excellent ADDON, a great achievement to transcribe the VSTOL flight under MSFS. The modeling of both the aircraft and its cockpit are superb. I only have one wish: an update so that your aircraft carriers are mobile under MSFS! Can't wait for you to make us an E2C hawkeye for MSFS too!

Cannot recommend this in its current state, especially given the price. There are serious texture bleeding issues, the taxiways completely lack night lighting, and there are typos on some of the ground markings. The modelling and apron work has a lot of potential, and I would give this a higher rating if these issues were to be fixed.
